Every year, about two weeks before St. Patrick's Day, someone will request a couple of pounds. Nobody sells partial bales of Candela because they know they'll be stuck with whatever is left for only God knows how long...until next St. Patrick's day I guess.

I bought it on speculation of it becoming popular with the dope smoking crowd. A green leaf to roll your green baccy in...I think it will be a hit...hoping it will be a hit anyway. If not, I have a lifetime's supply for everyone in the forum.

Yeah, I was going to ask a grower here to do it eventually I thought. It has to do with some LFD Salomon Unico wrapping I wanted to do. Nice!

I accidentally made some candela during my very first attempt at flue-curing. (You just start with green leaf at 115°F. That was as low as my cheap, water heater thermostat would go, so I figured it couldn't be all that different from 103°F. Ha! It smelled like cooking asparagus, until it finished curing.) It was Big Gem, and came out like green shoe leather. Sun-grown candela is not the way to go.

Candela shade leaf is the right stuff--large and tissue thin. Many years ago, I was presented with an entire box of Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey coronas in candela wrappers. They were quite strong, but smooth in the mouth. Candela has nearly no taste, and leaves you with the aroma of the bound bunch. It's similar to smoking a cigar in a mouthpiece, or cigar tobacco in a pipe.

Until the mid-1960s, nearly all cigars sold in the US were wrapped in candela. They called it AMS, standing for "American Market Selection", as opposed to EMS, indicating "European Market Selection". Candella was "modern". It was expected. Cigars in "natural" or (gulp!) maduro, were rare as hen's teeth.

Cigars in rosado wrappers are mesmerizing. Partagas Spanish Rosado comes to mind. (They pair it with a cream colored band and maroon markings. Perfect.) Beautiful stuff.
