Starting today there is a new law in effect for the city of Ottawa Ontario, Canada. The law states that it is now illegal to smoke in public parks, public patios/terraces and public beaches. Another change was put into effect today concerning liquor licences for people holding events enabling them to pay for one permit to cover the complete duration of the event instead of daily permits. Up here, tobacco products are hidden from view in all stores that sell them, even tobacconists. Tobacco advertising and event promotions by tobacco copanies of any kind is also illegal yet anywhere alcohol is sold it is plain view, advertised in stores, bars, magazines, tv and radio with no restriction. This whole control thing is driving me crazy.

well, i guess the united states is having a lot of influence over how your country is conducting it's business,

i believe it was the U.S. influence that got MARK EMORY arrested,
and now we are coping your health care system...
and your copying the laws of NEW YORK CITY... you cant smoke there either,
....................

and at one time i considered canada as a very free society, and a country of very lax laws,
but the ever growing vine of true socialism, is climbing on all of us,

Insanity I tell ya. I quit drinking over a year and a half ago and quit smokin dope over a half year ago. All I got left is my love of GOOD tobacco, which I can't get unless it's from another country. Canadian tobacco is a monopoly, fairtrade dosen't exist here. All tobacco grown is sold to ONE association to be registered and tracked to any of the 2 (I think there's only 2) tobacco manufacturers. We can't buy canadian tobacco unless it has gone through this process, so, no whole leaf here unless you grow it, for ornamental purposes only. Gov'ments ruining everything. Killed all the environmental programs to capitalize petroleum production, among other things

Matty Canadian law states you can grow and process 33 lbs of tobcco for anyone over the age of 18 years and lives on the growing property . Alberta just passed a .05 alcohol tolerance for driving. no impaired charge but they impound your vehicle for 72 hrs. Why we need 2 drinking and driving laws eludes me. We already have a .08 impaired law. Just another cash cow as far s I can tell Russ

@Chicken, yeah lol, I used to read about him in a certain magazine when I was a teenager ;)
@Lakota, I may have been misinformed about the growing. Figuring out what we can and can't do according to the law gets confusing when specific answers are required. Lately I've been trying to learn about postal importation in Quebec, really hard to piece some of the regulations together, a lot of ifs and buts.

In the USA I had to go through the Texas Dept. of Agriculture, to find out the facts on what was legal pertaining to my interests. Do you have your provinces set up to contact agencys pertaining to yours? If so it should be helpfull to contact them and ask specific questions about the law and your intentions. Don't be surprised if they have to get back to you and if they don't then keep trying. I was lucky and actualy got my calls returned. All in all it took a week or so and half of that was finding the right agency to contact. It opened up a whole new world for a smoker of as many years as me.

Matty,

Six or seven months back I remember one of your fellows (from BC I think) tracked this down pretty thoroughly. Use the search box (Upper right hand corner) and track it down.

@Barg, yeah, we have what's called the ontario flue cured tobacco growers association (I think that's the name). I sent them an e-mail several times in the past with no reply. They are the ones (according to Imperial tobacco co.) who control all the tobacco commercially grown in Canada. I have a few more contacts to try for more information.
@johnlee1933, I think I found that thread, there where links to some pdfs which I downloaded. Thing is that I don't have a proper computer to view them properley, I use my phone for internet, 2"X4" display, they're hard to read. I found some information I'm looking for within the file but have yet to read it through.
Thanks for the help guys, this is a real great site with a lotta good souls. When I get everything together I'm planning to post a thread on it to simplify the information as there are several of us "northerners" here.
