For all you guys getting soil test done for your tobacco crop, keep in mind your recommendations will be the same as for a commercial grower. Recommendations for commercial growers will yield lush, thick growth. Tobacco is sold by weight and not necessarily quality. Adding a lot of Nitrogen will increase your nicotine levels. If that is what you want then by all means go by the recommendations. Keep in mind too that Turkish tobaccos main claim to fame is that they are typically grown on unfertilized, non irrigated soil.

Jitterbugdude is right about fertilizing . Turkish or any oriental needs little to no fertilizer .

Other tobacco I believe need enough to grow as a healthy plant . Starve them too much they stunt and premature bloom . They will have small leaves and less leaf count per stalk .

Turkish varietals themselves will have lower nicotine than Virginias and Burleys, even when planted and grown in a similar fashion.
