For those of you planning to grow/smoke Vuelta Abojo cigars this year I found this little blurb in the 1912 edition of the book entitled "Facts on Cigars" by Eugene Vallens. I understand that there is a lot of hype associated with cigars but nonetheless the authors says..

" The choicest tobacco is raised in the famous Vuelta Abajo district of the Pindar del Rio Province... No place in the world produces tobacco of such aroma as in this section..."

and later on, he says: " The only good Havana tobacco is that which is raised on fine soil in the Vuelta Abaja section.."

smoke 'em if you got 'em

I am planting 25 plants of Vuelta Abajo this year. I looking forward to growing this strain this year. What is considered "fine soil" to grow this tobacco?

I'm going to grow a couple of plants of several varieties to sample and fill a few jars with seed. This will be one of them. I understand it's a great Cuban variety.

I'm turning ground tomorrow. I'll get a picture to show you what fine soil looks like. rocketwhore.gif

I just requested these from the seed bank. I'm going to grow as many as I can get to germinate.

This thread makes me really regret losing all these plants last year. I have over 4000 started then catastrophe hit.

John, you'll get your seeds too.

Does anyone have a friend in Cuba who can scoop up a little dirt from the Vuelta Abajo region and send it to one of our Canadian brothers? It would be nice to get an analysis done and recreate the medium.

I have a Cuban friend but he's living here :) Anyway, I found some briefs about Cuban soils but haven't read them yet.

I'm going to have to go through isric.org when I get home. I want to see that kind of information on Turkish soils. Thanks istanbulin!
