Some of the stems Long and some short. Like the Churchwarden. Is it just a style, or a cooling of the smoke that changes the flavor?

It's mostly a style thing, but the cooling effect is a bonus of the longer ones. There are also some shorter pipes called a Reverse Calabash that try to cool the smoke also. They are usually fat stubby pipes that have a secondary air chamber before the stem to help cool the air.

Kaywoodie( I think) made a pipe a long time ago called a carburetor pipe. It had a tiny hole at the base of the bowl. You could control the introduction of cool air into the hot chamber by using your finger. I have one but have not noticed any difference one way or another... but it is cool..to own.

Yep I smoked one. They had the nasty habit of bleeding brown goo out that little hole. I never saw any advantage and the mess was a pita. As I remember it didn't last long.

Dr. Grabow had a model out like this too called the CDL it had a long thin metal stem, "CDL" stood for "cool, dry and light" , I had two of them given to me by a friend from when his dad passed, they were only made for about 5 years as kind of a prototype
