One ounce and one pound.

1 lb = 16 oz

16 oz = 453.592372 gm

100% ÷ 40 = 2.5%

453.59237 ÷ 40 = 11.3398093 gm

11.3398093 gm is 2.5% of 1 lb. and 10% of 1 lb is 45.3592372 gm or 1.6 oz.

16 oz ÷ 40 = 0.4 oz

1 oz = 28.349523 gm

28.349523 gm ÷ 40 = 0.70873808 gm

Then there was rounding numbers ...

1 oz ÷ 40 = 0.025 oz

... 0.4 oz is 2.5% of 1 lb and,

... 11.36 gm is 2.5% of 1 lb ...

... 0.025 oz is 2.5% of 1 oz and,

... 0.71 gm is 2.5% of 1 oz

EXAMPLE : Makinit
................... .................................. 1 oz ................1lb
Flue Cured Virginia Bright Leaf 30% = 8.52 gm X 16 = 136.32 gm

..Flue Cured Virginia Red Leaf 12.5% = 3.55 gm X 16 = 56.8 gm

.....Flue Cured Virginia Lemon 12.5% = 3.55 gm X 16 = 56.8 gm

........................Kentucky Burley 5% = 1.42 gm X 16 = 22.72 gm

..........................Maryland 609 30% = 8.52 gm X 16 = 136.32 gm

..........................Turkish Izmir 7.5% = 2.13 gm X 16 = 34.08 gm

................Kentucky Fire Cured 2.5% = 0.71 gm X 16 = 11.36 gm
.................................________________
.. ............. ...... ....... ......... 100% = 28.4 gm .......... 454.4 gm

It is traditional in pipe blending to record blend components in 16[sup]ths[/sup] of a pound. So a 4 component blend might be recorded as 5:3:4:4. If you happen to be blending a pound, then the parts represent ounces. Given the variation within a single batch of a single variety of leaf, this crude measure of parts per 16 parts seems reasonable.

0.75 inch divided by 0.015625 equals 48/64th of an inch or 48 ring gauge

0.78 inch divided by 0.015625 equals 50/64th of an inch or 50 ring gauge

0.9375 in. divided by 0.015625 equals 60/64th of an inch or 60 ring gauge

64 ring gauge times 0.015625 equals 1 inch

Thanks Marc, did not know cigar ring size was simply 64ths of an inch.y

Okay, I didn't want to start a new thread on maybe something like this one. I figured it was related by bla bla figure out something. I guess my point is finding a ring gauge by measuring a cigar by hundreds of an inch, it could be divided by 0.015625 to get the ring gauge in 64ths of an inch.
