Here's the latest email

OK. Didn't think this was necessary but please use your site name (here it is in case fairtradetobacco.com ) instead of the mediacollege.com site.

Here are the directions right off that site:

In Windows, select Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. This will give you a window like the one below.Enter the word tracert, followed by a space, then the domain name.

If you guys need more help please let me know.

I don't know WTF. WTF is right though. If you think that's bad, try dealing with the prima donnas on the VBulletin site. If you don't know how to write code, they treat you like a red headed step child. If you don't talk their lingo, you're a moron and they let you know it too. Without a doubt the most cold hearted, hateful people I've ever encountered not only on the internet, but anywhere. Their shit doesn't stink and if yours does, you don't belong there.

Seanz has it right. (I took their instructions literally, incorrectly assuming that their server was at mediacollege.com.)

Save the sentence, "tracert fairtradetobacco.com" somewhere you can find it later. If you are unable to reach FTT, open a DOS window (run cmd), type in tracert fairtradetobacco.com, then press enter...and wait. That's the info Don needs for the wonks.

A method to see if you can get any response from the FTT site, you can open a DOS window and enter:

ping fairtradetobacco.com

I've e-mailed the info to Maks so he can run a trace. If he can't get back on, he'll e-mail the trace to me and I'll post it here.

The Concept of Trace Route

Picture yourself out in the Gulf of Mexico in a small boat. You want to go to New Orleans. As you approach the Mississippi River Delta, there are numerous river channels. As you work your boat through the various branches of the channel, each juncture getting you closer to New Orleans, you write down each of the intersections (say, with a set of GPS coordinates). The route you choose is somewhat random, but eventually you get to New Orleans. Your list of intersections, and the time it took for each leg are similar to a Trace Route.

On the Internet, the path your messages take (from one "node" to another) to reach FTT may be similar or different with each page navigation, and usually includes a dozen or more hops. Each FTT member starts from a different location as well. Trace Route (tracert) will record each relay node along the way, and the time it takes (in milliseconds) to get to that node.

IF the Trace Route of many FTT members reaches the host server where FTT is hosted, but can't get to the FTT forum, then there is a problem that the hosting company must resolve. [It's their fault.]

If, on the other hand, many FTT members (in different locations) are blocked at a number of different nodes along the way, then likely the DNS Servers (that translate "fairtradetobacco.com" to its IP address) do not have the correct IP address for the forum. This can happen after a website changes to a new IP address [e.g. changing the hosting company], since the updated IP must propagate across all the Internet's DNS servers (the nodes in the Trace Route) throughout the world. This update starts at the Domain Name Registry (the authoritative DNS server), and is replicated over a period of days to all DNS servers.

So, Boboro, they can't run it from the host side. It's a question of how the messages move from your house to theirs.

What is truly amazing is that any of this works at all. The beauty of having many alternate paths is that a disruption of any one node (or even several nodes) is simply bypassed using an alternate path.
