I just finished putting up my shade cloth. This is the stuff that Johnlee sent me last year. Since I already had mine up last year I didn't use his till now. All I can say is "WOW" this stuff is at least half the weight as the other stuff I used. It is so light that I was able to put up a 30 ft row all by myself. The other cloth I used is what you would buy if you did a search for "shade cloth". It is heavy stuff and takes two people on ladders to pull it up and over my 10 ft frame. Both are 40% shade cloth. It does not seem as though it would be as durable as the heavy stuff but if you can buy "real" tobacco shade cloth it would be worth it.

Thanks Johnlee!

Randy B

ps.. I'm growing 13 Florida Sumatras under it. Should yield me about 300 wrappers.

How about a picture? I'm growing between my planted pine rows for shade this year, but have been thinking about clearing an acre for shade grows.

For what it's worth here are some pics. The white stuff is what I got from Johnlee, the black stuff is the expensive, heavy stuff I bought a few years ago.

No I did not. I just got that it came from spain, was about 2/3 acre/roll and was $1000/ roll. Do you want me to ask about brand name and supplier?

Bob, I don't know why it doesn't blow over. I 've never had the cloth blow off nor had the poles bend. Possibly the porous weave of the cloth allows just enough wind to go through so as to not act like a parachute. I did noticed though that the white cloth blows in the slightest breeze whereas the black heavy stuff took a strong wind to move it.

I should note that the cloth is attached to the conduit with clips. I believe I have a link to them in last year's post showing my shade cloth set up.

I suppose that would be a start. I'm more interested in what the industry calls the stuff since all search results for "Shade cloth", "Tobacco shade cloth", "shade gauze" etc. etc come up empty. I know someone makes the stuff...I just can't find any info.

Have you looked at these? http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/category/shade-cloth/2 I also did a search under flower farm material as I saw these growing up in S.Fla. at a lot of flower farms.

This is the stuff that I originally bought. It is very, very heavy and expensive. On the plus side, it is very durable and would probably last a homeowner 20 years if cared for properly. A 40 ft x 20 ft piece would cost me $124.00

Hey can anyone help me out with a question? ?? Should you grow ct broadlef in shade to?
Because of the natural partial shade I have, I have grown broadleaf in ~ 40% shade. The only differences I noticed are a more delicate, milder leaf. I guess it depends on what you are after. If you are going to the trouble of shading some plants for wrapper CT shade is a better choice. In my experience any leaf grown in the shade is more delicate.

An update: After about 6 weeks the cloth is sagging considerably. It's no big deal though. The material is so much thinner than the black stuff that it doesn't hold as tight. It'll take me about 5 minutes to take the sag out.

A shot inside. I have 13 Florida Sumatra in here. The leaf is primo!
