Where a real shovel is too big (nearly always once the dirt is tilled) and a hand trowel is too small (most of the time). Picked this guy up at WalMart for only $7. Made by Black & Decker. Found on a seasonal display in the garden center.

Small enough for detail work and got enough a$$ to actually dig/move dirt when necessary.

Fellow military vets like myself will find it nearly identical in size to the good ole "E-tool" but it doesnt fold and weighs about half as much.

Those are great shovels. When I take a long 4 wheeler trip in new territory, I bungee one of those shovels and an Eastwing axe to the rear of the back rack. I've had to dig and pry myself out of a couple mud holes before. Great size. (And thank you for your service!)
