Ok. So pipe is new to me. I find it enjoyable except for having to relight too often. Any pointers for packing or dryness of baccy so i can just light and enjoy?

You need a tamper. I use a cartridge case with a bolt epoxied in. As the tobacco burns down, give it a light tamp to keep the fire and tobacco together. It also needs a fairly frequent sip to keep the fire stoked, more so than a cigar.

The important thing to remember is relights are not important, the key to enjoying your tobacco in a pipe is to keep it burning as cool as possible, so a constant puffing is going to burn your mouth, make your pipe gurgle, it takes a little time and practice to get your bowl packing, and tamping techniques fine tuned, but once you do you start to enjoy it more and the relights you wont even notice.
If your pipe becomes hot while smoking set it down and allow it to cool off b4 relighting, if it gurgles swab it out with a cleaner

I like my leaf to have just enough moisture to not be crumbly. When I pack a bowl I sprinkle the baccy in until it gets to the top. Then I lightly pack it down, usually about half full, so that it springs back up a little. If you push it down and it doesn't spring back a little it's too tight. Then I'll fill it up the rest of the way. Same thing here, it should be a little springy when you push down on it. Next is the char light. Light it up moving the flame around the top so that it burns all the loose ends on the top. After that you can lightly tamp the leaf down and light it back up and enjoy. It takes a little practice but soon enough you'll be a pipe smoking pro.

and like Knuck said after you have a few puffs use a tamper and lightly tamp the ash down, don't compress the tobacco, just the ash... after a while it all becomes second nature, you don't think about what your doing , and you just enjoy your tobacco

I find that drier tobacco stays lit better. The commercial tobacco I used to smoke contained 20% water by weight, and after a few pipesful the dottle became most annoying.

This thread reminds me of the story of the scotsman who gave up pipe smoking in disgust. Filling from his own pouch, it was so loose it wouldn't stay lit. And when he filled from someone else's pouch, it was packed so tight he couldn't draw it.

Thank you for the hospitality. I thought it was better than a bottle of wine considering the occasion. :)

I use a pencil smetimes at work. I like My bowl large enough to put My finger in it to pack it. Works great. Remember to hot-will burn the lip and crack the pipe, as well as nasty tast to good baccy. I smoke a cigarette pipe, It helps and small.

That sounds good advice Aaron.
