anything from .085 to 2 mm is ideal. 1 mm is about 1/32" and 2 mm is about 1/16".

High security shredders have a security rating of 5 and 6 which is 1 mm to .070 mm, but they are expensive as hell.

The other problem with HS shredders is they're made for paper and I don't believe they have rakes to clear the cutters like a pasta maker does. An angel hair pasta cutter would be ideal for a shredder and probably cost a lot less than a paper shredder and work better.

Here's one that looks like it would work nicely, but I can't tell if there are rakes for the cutter. Without the rakes, any machine will clog up with tobacco.

This can be rigged up to a cordless drill with some kind of bracket to make a base....or hook it up to your pasta maker if you have one.

Here's one you just hook up to your KitchAid...if you have one. If not, build a bracket and make a crank.

This one looks perfect...and it's cheap too

We should have an "On-line Auction" forum. To list stuff like this that might interest other members.

Here's another good cutter

Shred size 0.08" x 0.31" 1/12th of an inch by 1/3rd of an inch
My paper shredder cuts them .200 by 1.25 of an inch

I used my paper shredder on about 10 gallons of shredded Tobacco leaves it worked like a champ
the only problem was the size it cut really sucks for cigarettes tube injectors.
I had to let the tobacco re-dry to a crispy state and crumble it down to size by hand then re-case it in my kiln.
It works but that is the hard way to go about it , my pasta cutter works but it doesn't rake it clear and clogs constantly

I have a tobacco shredder that I got from fresh choice. It is a modified mailmate m5 paper shredder. It works just fine with no plugging problems. I have to run the tobacco through 3 times to get the right shred. I have shredded up over 60# so far with no issues with the machine. It is fast and easy to use and I am happy with it.

Larry,

If it's a legitimate company, they'll send a salesman out with one to demonstrate it. The 0.8 shred looks right. If these are affordable, they might be a great companion to the roll your own shops by shredding whole leaf on the spot.

My pasta shredder was under 30.00. A roughening with the dremel tool and it shreds pretty good. If doing a huge amount I'd recommend attaching a drill or some kind of motor mechanism. My hand just gets too wore out.

On mine one of the gears was loose and I put some "J.B. Weld" on it and it works ok now.
I took the cover of the end thats on the opposite side as the hand crank and the gear is in a groove that
wasn't made very well so I mixed up a little dab of the J.B. Weld and pushed the gear into the proper alignment
to the other gear and glued it.
It works ok now.

The gears on my paste shredder where of a junk metal. they stripped out after just a short time. I removed the gears from the other set of rollers and got back to shredding. those gears also stripped out in short order. In this case the gears where simply made of to soft a metal. Does anyone know of a brand of pasta shredder that has better quality gears at the ends of the rollers?
