Evening gentlemen at the moment i have a mix of 3 leaves of maryland, samsun, and burley all bought into case and rolled and then cut into coins, its my first taste of the maryland and and samsun not too bad really all air cured and left to age for about six months or so so im thinking it could do with some time in the kiln but its not too bad. apart from when i forget and start sucking like a baby on a teat then she starts to bite.so whats in your pipe these days? I still buy pipe tobacco as i am no where near the samual gawith that tickles my pallette.

Wish I can talk with. My Dad was a pipe smoker all his life, when he died 2010 my mom gave me all his pipes, but I struggle with them, burn my tongue, maybe I`m to stupid to smoke a pipe. Will stick to cigars. Enjoy.

I smoke all kinds of blends Sean, here is an order of my favorite blends, I am partial to English blends, and the oriental blends both with and with out latakia in them, and then Virginias and burleys, and then some Aro's I have a hard time smoking anything with perique in it as it seems to irritate my tongue

Ben Sorry for your loss, the thing about smoking a pipe is it takes time and practice to learn, the two biggest mistakes a new piper makes is 1) packing the pipe to tight. and 2) puffing like a train to keep it lit
if you look on youtube you can find tutorials on how to pack your pipe and the proper smoking techniques, also there are a couple of forums I go to, the old guys love to help new pipers with their smoking, you can always ask questions or search previous questions one forum is http://brothersofbriar.forumotion.com/ and the other is http://pipesmokersforum.com/community/

My favorite pipe blends are all (100%) Turkish tobaccos without any other types like Virginia etc.. They're generally very mild but flavorful if smoked in right way because some of them tend to burn hot. But when you catch the rhythm of smoking, very delicious.

I smoke more single varieties in my pipe than I do blends and lately I'm leaning towards the orientals, Samsun-Maden, Harmanliiska Basma 163 and Alma-Ata 315 are my favorites. I'll also smoke straight Burley, Virginias, Dark Air and Maryland. When I get in a new cigar variety I haven't tried before, I'll give it a go in the pipe first to get an idea of it's flavor and how it will work with other leaf or leaf positions for a cigar blend. A pipe snob I'm not. Flog me if you must.

I am far from a pipe snob I forget to clean them, smoke the same pipe for days in a row. I enjoy a good manufactured blend. But most of the time i am a stuff and puff with what ever is handy I am sure my tongue has calluses on calluses :)
What with bitey tobacco and chilli I am amazed i have any taste buds left

I'm looking forward to see some homegrown pipe blends here Sean. I now have 2 homeade pipes, a briar from Knucks and a meershaum from Aaron, but no homegrown blend to do them justice. I have a couple of the makings to work toward a good blend ,but I'm not there yet.

istanbulin, I just pulled a prilep p66 flue cured from deluxes 2013 cozy can leaf [still in case and very aromatic smell] folded it up and snipped it with my swiiss army knife scissors to make some flakes. It is some very nice pipe candy.

Glad to see that you like it, my Prileps were very strong (almost like a Burley) this year so I couldn't smoke them straight.

BarG, That pipe is made of Madrone. I would love to get my hands on a bolck of meerschaum but I guess it's actually illegal to export it in a raw form.

I wish I had a good recipe to share with you all but my blends are always a pinch of this and a dab of that. I just got some Aleman Seco from Don that I've been having fun mixing in my blends.

Aaron, it's apparently legal to ship with predrilled holes, you can see blocks on ebay for sale but they are all predrilled. They do leave the shaping up to you with a fair amount of leeway.

Legal or not, there are guys from Turkey (on Ebay) that sell raw meer. No holes-no nothin'
I think for you pipe makers you would probably be dissapointed in buying a block of meer this way. I have a friend who has bought 5 of the "carve your own" meer kits. Every single one of them had a flaw in it that was revealed once he started carving. There is probably a reason why some of the high end Meer Pipe carvers charge so much. They probably throw away more meer blocks than they keep due to imperfections.

With all that said, I actually own a block of meer that has no holes in it yet. Just a hunk of Meer. Every year I plan to work on it during the winter but so far I haven't touched it. Maybe this year......

In keeping this tread on track I also have to mention that I typically smoke unblended tobacco in my pipe. I usually smoke Samsun Maden but lately I'm really likeing Virginia Brightleaf by itself and Tekekkoy by itself.
