it's getting cold in florida, a cold front is passing thru,, but i dont want my baccy to die,,,, i'd rather bring it all in ,,,

ive still got a lot of baccy in the patch,,,, mainly suckers that have grown quiet big,,,but they are ripe and ready for a picking,,,

is it wise to go ahead and harvest it, instead of taking a chance,???

There would have to be a hard frost to kill your tobacco. It seems to me your plants should have been ripe quite a while ago though. How late did you set your plants?

i actually started them real early,,,

what is growing now is the suckers i let go,,,,

i have 3 foot branches coming out of the main stalk, with nice sized leaves,,,

but if it takes a hard frost,,,, then i wont be in such a hurry to pick them,,,,

i'll let them ripen some more,

I set my plants out on may 15th last spring. we continued to have very cold, even snow and light freezing right up to July 1st. 6 weeks of way to cold. The tobacco did fine. I just covered it on the coldest of nights and can not say that was even necessary.

A few years ago, I had some plants in the field that lived through 3 hard freezes. Not all of the varieties lived, but almost all of the Oriental varieties survived at least one hard freeze.

Those are just the suckers that came back after the plant were cut the first time . I couldn't stand to harrow them in , So I waited and cut the bigger ones . I harrowed some that should have been primed and kept .

If the first CT broadleaf plants are in case in the morning , I will try and take some pictures of them to post . Some are 12 to 13 inches wide and 24 to 28 inches long cured and dried .

Light Frost wont hurt tobacco too bad but if it freezes it will balcken to a dark wattery green . 36 degrees shouldn't hurt it . It got to 32 a few nights ago and some I had in the field that I am not going to harvest didn't hurt at all .two or three frost may damage it .

well i can honestly say when i do,,,the final picking,,, i have so much in the field that my hanging area is going to once again be full...

i have enough kilned up to have a lot of smoke for a while,,, so the green leaves that are in the field, im gonna let air cure, with no kiln,,,
