I was wondering what the primitive varieties like Orinoco, Daule, Pretinho etc. are classified as. Are these considered N. Rusticas?

The reason I ask is I thought I read somewhere that rusticas won't cross pollinate with N. Tabacum and while I was looking for information on this something came up about N. Sylvestris and N. Benthamiana . I've never heard of these before and all they said is they're called woodland tobacco and they're planted for their fragrant flowers.

Does anyone have more info. on these?

What is this?

"Primitive" is listed as a type of N. Tabacum.

Hello Rev. Williams,

Primitive is the classification given to certain tobacco varities
that are generally low in height, flowers early, has lots of
suckers, and small narrow leaves. To my knowledge they are in
their original form as found. There has not been cross-breeding
to improve them for commericial sale, as compaired to say
Flue Cured Varities. I hope this answers your question. If
you need more answers or questions, please let me know.

Best regards,

That's the concept of "primitive," but as you've seen from your own grow-outs of "primitive" varieties, they often exceed Mr. Woodlief's expectations. The Tabasqueño Prieto that I grew last year was fairly nice cigar filler, though it's productivity was a bit on the low side.
