So... Not having a clue what I was doing, I purchased this beaut for $8. I've just begun researching the art of pipe cleaning/restoration/repair, and I'll probably have a go at it regardless, but I'm wondering what I found. A cursory Google search wasn't very helpful in figuring out what I have...

The markings say:

Whitehall RED DOT
IMPORTED BRIAR

and then (very faintly on the bottom of the stem): MEXICO

Thanks in advance!

I think you got a good deal. Looks like a little cleaning up and she's ready to smoke. How well does it draw?

It's definitely a tighter draw than my newly bought corncob was/is. I'm trying to figure out how to clean it before I take too big of a suck; I blew through the stem and some debris, including a dead bug or three came flying out... The bowl looks nearly new, though!

That's a lovely little pipe ... the tobacconists in the UK won't sell you something that size unless you ask for a dentures pipe for old guys with false teeth that can't cope with a heavy one!

I love a small pipe myself ... I feel ill smoking a good heavy mixture in a full-sized one.

I completely understand the sentiment. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about them either... In the vein of needing to know how to do everything, I thought I'd get it and take a crack at getting it back up to speed. Worse case is that I'm out $8, and some time. That being said, I do like the smaller bowl.

So, the stem will spin, but I can't get it out. Thoughts?

It should just be a slip fit. Turn and pull at the same time. There may just be some gunk built up on the end of the tenon. Pull harder and turn it at the same time.

Here's my introduction to pipe making from acquiring the tools to making pipes. You can see how pipes go together and the polishing process: http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/1768-Pipe-Making-supplies-and-sources I had a lot of help from the established makers like Aaron at the time. BigCasino is making some really nice pipes now.

A nice forum for pipe makers: www.pipemakersforum.com There are some good threads on refurbishing estate pipes.

Looks hardly used..good score..once you clean it up it will be as good as new. .use some pure alcohol. .it will clean it up good and kill any germs..use some fine sandpaper..so you don't scratch it up too much..looks like the owner was left handed.

Not terribly important. I think it's supposed to condense moisture and stuff outta the smoke. I had a pipe with one and didn't notice any difference.

Here's my estate pipes a scored a while back for $30nzd ($20) I was pretty happy with my find..and they are basically back to new once you reco. them a bit. .I got about 11 I think? And 2 falcon bowls..Not even $3 each. .you won't find any pipes for that price.all I need now is a falcon stem..if anyone has one they don't want. .

Nice score Jeky.
Before I got into pipes, I considered myself a bent stem kinda guy. In my estate buy, there were a few bent and a few straight. Out of the 5-6, there is only one that I use, and it is a Billiard.
tryals, when I got my estates, I brought them back to new. Scraped out all the carbon. Yea, no-no, but within a few months you can get that char back. All mouth pieces were cleaned with whiskey. Take a pipe cleaner, soak it in whiskey, and run it through. Keep doing it till it comes out clean/clear. You can even go as far as buffing the pipe with carnauba wax, but me personally, its an estate pipe, and who cares, so long as it smokes good.
BTW as far as draw, YMMV. I would feel safe to say. If it draws like you are drinking through a coffee straw, then you have a clogged pipe. If it pulls like you are drinking a soda through a soda straw, then you're good to go.

Wow, Todd! That's quite the haul!

FAL, the pipe was remarkably clean to start with. Charring, but no cake in the bowl and a whiskey flush brought out some but not much grime. I'm going to explore the buff/polish option.

Tried her out last weekend. She smoked well, save a pretty significant moisture buildup.

I have an estate Meerschaum pipe that does that. It sounds like somebody gargling mouth wash every time I take a draw on it. (once the pipe has heated up) I've thought of re-drilling the air hole to see if that makes any difference, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
