All of the farmers use almost same methods to grow and cure Oriental tobaccos regardless to the country. So nothing very different in cultivation in Greece as well as other Oriental tobacco growing countries.
Here's a map of Oriental tobacco growing regions;
As seen from the map, the major growing regions are located on the north of the country, especially in Western Thrace where Xanthi and Komotini take place. Other major area is located in the Central Macedonia Region, Katerini. There're more tobacco regions and varieties in Greece too, like Basma Serres, Basma Zichna, Basma Kavala etc. most of them are grown in Macedonia region.
This cities/regions also determines the name of the tobacco variety like Basma Komotini, Basma Xanthi or Katerini (not a Basma type but petiolate). I guess a lot of people grew Xanthi Yaka in this forum and knew that variety very well. Komotini has generally smaller leaves than Xanthi. Katerini (or Samsun Katerini) is a Samsun variety, has different characteristics than Basma varieties.
Production of Oriental varieties in Greece was 28 thousand (metric) tons in 2007.
When it comes to VA and Burley growing regions, the regions are more wide apart.
Burley is mostly grown in Central Macedonia. Production of VA and Burley (total) was 2 thousand (metric) tons in 2007. I guess, it's far from meeting the domestic consumption. Never mind friends, Orientals are enough
I really get tired while writing, I have to take a seat. Here's a nice place !
Storage of Basma Serres "bunches".
