I am wondering, if there are any job opportunities on a tobacco farm, for a non experienced ,older person (me),...?? I have been talking to one guy here where I work, and he was saying one thing that has to be done by hand is "picking" or removing the suckers, I can see how this would be very tedious work, but it is something I deffinately could do. Imagine it is "piece work". How much does that pay ? I did not ask him,....should have and maybe tomorrow I will.
I am getting kind of "burned out" with the work I am doing here, and would be very interested in any opportunitie to work on a tabacco farm, or even for a person with a smaller, non commercial growing operation. I do have experience with gardening, lawn care ,etc. And have worked, picking potatoes, apples, cherries, strawberrys.
A lot of tractor experience, cultivating, ground preparation (plowing),fertalizing ,amonia nitrate. I worked at a cattle feed lot at one time, and plowed, planted, cultivated, fertalized about 100 acres of corn and wheat, (don't remember exactly how many acres, but a lot, they had me on the tractor day and night.),did all the tractor work for them.
But now am especially interested in learning more about tobacco, all phases. For me, seasonal work would be better, because I do like to spend the winters here in Mexico with my family. I am a U.S. citizen, and speak spanish fluently, travel back and forth anually is no problem.
Anyway, if anyone knows of any opportunities, or someone I should contact it would be appreciated.
hope this post is ok ? and thanks from Garry
