I'd agree with DonH. Maryland doesn't have taste really. It just gives the kick at the back of the throat. I use a small amount of burley.

Briefly, my blend is 3/4 VA flue cured, and over half of that is light, like Lemon type-the rest is medium brightleaf and VA Red. The other 1/4 of the blend is approx equal parts burley, MD 609 and turkish, usually mixed izmur and prilep. I use WLT's casing for flue cured tobacco. Medium strength and good taste. I gotta go easy on the burley--too much makes the blend too strong for me, but some burley is essential to a good tasting cigarette, IMHO.

I appreciate it gentlemen. I was under the impression that Maryland was a legitimate substitute for Burley, but while they seem to be in the same category, the taste factor is obviously different. This may be the game changer for me. Although I'm not looking to duplicate my reds, I know burley is a critical component of that blend.
