Thought it was time to post a few photos of our tobacco here after the typhoon hit on 16th July this year i managed to replant a few in between the ones that still had their roots in the ground.
Most I have harvested now "see photos curing under car port". I have a few Virginia "dark" just flowering and some PA reds late planted. the fastest was the FL Sumatra awesome plants love them and leaf has cured to nice light brown and evenly colored as well. I have only 2 Crilio 98 going to seed aso 3 Habano 2000 as I did not have replacements for these as they got hammered by 200km+/hr winds.
The photo with my hand on the leaf is Pa Red...huge leaves thought these were a smaller leaf than these?.
Will have to attach the rest of the curing pics with next post as I have already reached my loading capacity by the looks of it.

These are the first leaves picked mainly FL Sumatra, they cure well with ambient temps never below 23c at night and 32c daytime. Humidity never below 70% but usually, well at the moment between 83 and 95% as we are still in the wet season so more or less ideal conditions at the moment.
Last leaves that are hanging looked a bit dried green but since have changed to golden brown, that was because we have a hot day and the air was dry.
Last 2 pics are Crilio 98 + Zimmer spanish flowers/pods. The Crilio 98 I measure the height @ 7ft a real tall one.
There are a lot more leaves hanging there now since those photos were taken.

Bob... I have grown the bahia variety from the seeds you sent, it seems to be the ugliest one of them all, lanky, not too sturdy and suckers prolifically, please tell me that this variety is a nice smoke!! Also what is the story with this one ....a Brazilian variety producing a dark and rich tobacco right? or a lot more to it?

Jerry.

Re: Curing under the car port

Some nice looking tobacco you have there. Be very vigilant with your tobacco being cured in your garage port. Since it is not completely enclosed you have a very high chance of getting mold.

Re: Curing under the car port

Yes your right, I check it a few times a day and separate some of the leaves, it looks pretty good so far with a good light breeze blowing through helps to keep the mold out and also it does not get wet, I had tobacco hanging in my other place then the outer leaves must of got wet and molded. Moisture from the air seems to be ok but any water splashed on them is dangerous!

Re: Curing under the car port

Once colored, consider moving the leaf to full sun or indoors with low humidity. At 70% or more, the leaf stems will refuse to dry completely, which is where most mold starts.

Thanks Knucklehead. Yes the plants grow so fast in this climate and thank God we have had no more typhoons since the big one.

Thanks for the advice DGBAMA Yes I have moved a lot of them to a dryer place where they will dry out more, the stems DO NOT dry out very fast as you mentioned in the current location. I have an indoor room where I separate them and they seem to be drying out better after the initial coloring/curing phase.

Bob. Thanks I am glad you liked the photos I did promise some to you even you had a nice view overlooking lake Taal where the semi active Taal volcano is. The soil type here is a crumbly well drained sandy loam but agronomy shows it is lacking in N + K + mg +Cl other trace elements are plentiful. Have to be careful with the fert especially the nitrogenous ones, timing is important nearing the flowering stage, not to much nitrogen!!
Btw. If I want to send seeds over there to the US, I guess it might be a bit hard because of my country here with quarantine or whatever? As I would like to swap and share some seeds, I have the Ilocos variety, they call it by many names but it is the local Virginia/Burley type they use for Philip Moris and other companies. I think it has crossed so many times, the growers just re>use their own seeds and most do not buy from the government agri dept certified. Just wondering if you or any one there would like to try some, I have 250gms in the fridge!!
I would like to try some other varieties this year as this is the proper coming season NOV through to April for planting tobacco here because we dont usually have any typhoons and the weather is drier.
Jerry.
Should have gone in grow logs, know next time thanks.

We are situated 4kms from the Taal volcano in Batangas Philippines. Yes the Pa red must be one of the best looking tobacco plants and leaves are huge. Could be my conditions here maybe? Hard to explain the Bahia to you perhaps I will take some photos on their own of that variety to post.
Jerry.

Sending seed into the US is more problematic than sending seed out of the US. It requires a government certificate of sanitation (seed inspection). What sort of tobacco variety (what use) are you looking for?

Philbaco, when sending seed to a tobacco hostile country, I use a normal letter size envelope as it does not require any customs stamp and is less likely to be opened for inspection. Make sure to pad the envelope with some bubble wrap to protect the seed from the sorting machines, which can flatten the seed and render them useless.
