Don, I apologize this being so late but I just stumbled on this thread.
Flea beetles are an AMAZING problem here, I can kill 300 a day and still have a "herd" of them the next morning.
One really good cure for them is either synthetic pyrethroids (Lambda/Beta Cyalothrin) or organic pyrethroids (Chrysanthemum extract). It's topical and needs to make direct contact with the flea beetles but they die nice and easily. A half life of around 24 days is to be expected.
IF you're not worried about organics, go get some Spectracide Triazicide from Menards/Lowes. Works great, wears off quickly (no worries for food or tobacco) and helps quite a bit.
