Modern Tobacco with Low converter LC

What is everyone opinion of the low converter tobacco in the new tobacco plants that big tobacco requires its growers to grow ?

I was wondering if our non low coverter heirloom tobacco varietys may not be as good as we think they are .

Nicotine converts to nornicotine which is SUPPOSEDLY bad for our health .

I just did a quick search of the collection and I'm happy to say, many (with information available) contain low amounts of nornicotine. Some have "0", one has 30 something. Unfortunately, a lot of the seeds in the collection are post 1976 when the detailed observations did not include nornicotine levels.

I did a little reading and the seed developers are looking at old varieties to find varieties with low levels to do cross breeding with. High levels of nornicotine cause ful tasting tobacco with a "mousy" smell. Can someone tell me what a "mousy" smell smells like?

Thats all the Burley and Dark air / fire farmers are alowed to grow for big tobacco , Its in our contracts that we only grow the LC tobacco . Its has been this way for about 6 to 10 years now .
I have noticed that this years crop doesn't smell like tobacco to me . My 2010 crop had a good tobacco smell .
I have smoked some Green Brior burley and they both seem about the same to me .
I am not real sure about Flue tobacco I don't think it has to be a LC tobacco .

The way I have read about tobacco with out being a LC tobacco it can lead to Alzheimer's disease , Diabetes and other problems .Im sure the study may have been made by some antismoking group . But it also makes me wonder , If this wasn't true why would big tobacco demand us tobacco farmers grow only tobacco that is LC .

This also make me wonder if some of the heirloom varietys may change the nicotine to excessive Nornicotine . Possibly from the more nicotine potent varietys of tobacco plants .

As far as taste goes tobacco companies could roll up a news paper and coat it with their secret recipe and it would taste like a Marlboro

I really think that is true as long as tobacco companies have access to some type of tobacco period. They do not seem as concerned with true tobacco taste as much as how it will end up in their brew.

Actually, nornicotine is good for you!. Remember the old adage, the dose determines to poison. Nornicotine is what is responsible for the lower rates of Alzheimer's and Parkinsons in moderate cigarette smokers. There is some real good research in this area and the mechanisms of how it is protective are pretty well understood. Nornicotine is also a very good analgesic. I think that big tobacco wants the LC tobacco because it is bland and will not affect their flavorings they add.

Maybe we should have a section for "scientific studies of tobacco"? I have a file that keeps getting bigger and bigger. Most of it contains scientific studies ( in mainstream journals) that support the notion that smoking ( in small to moderate doses) is not unhealthy. It is an extremely difficult field to understand though because almost ALL scientists start a study on tobacco with the mindset that it is "bad" for you.
