Greetings.

I started rolling a couple days ago. Here's a photo blog of my progress:

http://homecigarschool.tumblr.com/

I'm using a 48-gauge mold I got from OneLeaf for around $50. I tried to find the same guy to make me a 38 mold on custommade.com, because I could see he was the guy who'd made the mold for leafonly, but he didn't seem to be doing work through custommade anymore. Another gal quoted me $150 for any ring gauge, 10-count mold. I'll leave that option in reserve.

For these cigars I've used the WLT Sabroso Medio kit. I got about 16 48-49-gauge 5" cigars out of that and today will use the 80g of scraps plus leftover small wrappers and binder to roll Cuban sandwich-type stuff.

Habana 2000 Wrapper
Dominican Cigar Binder
Nicaragua Habano Seco [equal parts]
Criollo 98 Viso [equal parts]

I got a cap cutting thing which is just a piece of pipe from leafonly, but the edges aren't filed down so it only helps make a ragged circle despite all my best efforts; I need to find a file to grind that thing down. Doing triple cap to start but eventually would like to figure out the Dominican method. As others here have pointed out the capping bit in rolling videos is typically impossible to figure out; but I did find a few that helped me figure out the middle cap of the triple a little bit better.

Hopefully these will taste pretty good eventually. I've got a couple more kits of other blends which I'll start on in a few days.

Re: Pics of your Sticks II

Hi, thanks.

Name's Blake, from Santa Barbara, CA. 52 years of age, smoking cigars near-daily since '94. Decided to roll because cigars are too expensive; because I wanted to learn more about one of my love interests (cigars); and hoped to learn to design sticks that fit my needs in terms of flavor, strength, and shape, at a fair price. Used to enjoy fat strong cigars, but then I got tired of having a sore jaw and found I prefer the skinnier sticks. Also lost 25 pounds and suddenly old fave blends were too strong for me, nauseated me quickly into the stick, I guess because I've got less fat soaking up the nicotine or something. Actually the cigars I originally loved back around '94, '95, were things like maduro Partagas and Fuente; but somewhere along the line I must have caught the macho "I like bolder flavors" things and switched to non-Dominicans, first Hondurans, then Nica. I have a hunch its time to go back "home." So the next blend I'm rolling is primarily Dominican

Here's some photos of today's labors:

Thank you,

Welcome to the forum Blake! There's many things that will help you on this forum, and it looks like you are already off to a good start. I would recommend these videos to start: http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/4575-Cigar-rolling-video-for-beginners

Also, if you have any questions, you can always ask anyone here. Also, if you're looking for leaf: http://www.WholeLeafTobacco.com There are also pre-mixed blend kits available to quickly access what you may like: http://wholeleaftobacco.com/Whole-Leaf-Cigar-Blends_c30.htm
This is a great place to start.

There is also tons of information to read here on FTT, a Cigar area, and plenty of RYO and DYI forums. Also, a search bar that helps as well.

Once again, welcome!

Good job, looks like you're off to a good start. The WLT Sabroso Medio kit was also my first roll. WLT has some fine leaves, you'll be pleased with them. You'll find a wealth of knowledge here at FTT, welcome.
