Reports from the Consuls of the United States, 1889. Some information on Indonesian tobacco (East coast of Sumatra) on page 675: http://books.google.com/books?id=5p...AEwAw#v=onepage&q=madura tobacco seed&f=false

Look at the table of contents, the book contains all kinds of interesting information.

Wow! 1395 accessions. Nice.

some of them are repeats of ours, but a lot of them aren't. my first email to the germplasm place was returned undeliverable (bummer). I just sent another to somebody else who is head of a program including tobacco research so we'll see... =/

I can ask Tran. I need to work with him on picture uploading. Are the two varieties " Jepon Kenek and Jepon Raja" the only two we are looking for, or any Sumatra varieties?

Second, how do I capture a screen shot? This may be the best way to show Tran the picture upload process. I have his email address.

the second one is the one that I tried and it came back undeliverable

Jessica, I tried the email address that you did not try, and my mail was also returned as undeliverable. Sorry. There is a snail mail address provided if you would like to give it a shot. If you want me to try it for you just let me know.

if you're using windows, screenshots are made by holding alt and then pressing PrtScn (for me that's a button above my arrow keys). then i usually open paint and hit ctrl C to paste and save it as a jpg or whatever.

so a person from Altadis contacted me and said they were actually going to Asia next month and that they would try to get some seeds for me- so its a start. I still haven't heard anything from the other email I sent to that germplasm repository.

I sent Tran a copy of my seed list. Hopefully I can get the seed list from his Germplasm Collection. He said he does what you do, but with only 200+ accessions. He wants to grow his bank so there is an opportunity there for trading seed. As Don suggested Tran may know someone in the seed business on Sumatra or in Indonesia that could help locate the Madura seed two varieties. Give him a PM, it can't hurt and could lead to the seed. Vietnam is a lot closer to Indonesia than we are. He was very grateful for the link you sent him and the worksheet Bob provided.

Firefox has a free add on you can get from Mozilla.com. It is for screen shots and allows you to use an arrow to point to an area of interest, capture part of a screen and add text that corresponds with the arrow. Here's the add on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fireshot/ You can make it work with explorer after download into Firefox.

Here's the thread I did for Tran showing how to upload pictures using the screen shots. It was my first time and I have a lot to learn about all the features.: http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/3809-How-to-post-pictures-from-your-computer-to-FTT

Great thread, I would think that cloth against rain damage AND the need in the USA for a better leaf is responsible for today's methods. Farmers thinking of ways to protect their crop was the Indonesian way, it started at that time because it was the first time they could afford it due to exports. Schroeder & Bon just found a way of adding value to their crop. These things happen!

Just a theory.

That is great news Jessica. Were you able to find the particular varieties that your friend was looking for?
