My son shipped these back from Peru. The bundles (carrottes) are wrapped with palm seed pod lashing. They are hard enough to hammer a nail. The taste of the tobacco is nutty and a little spicy, but not peppery. It leaves a very pleasant and long lasting aftertaste. My son was told it is "jungle tobacco". Each carrotte weighs about 1 3/4 lbs. We are looking into buying these in bulk. Can be used in a cigarette blend or a pipe. I'm trying to hydrate some of it to see if there is any long filler to be had, but my guess is this stuff is fused together from the processing and fermenting.

The next time any of you put in an order, request a disk of the Peru tobacco and I 'll send a sample. Pretty interesting stuff.

Yeah I'm super interested, hope you can do bulk, cause I'd definitely buy them, well I probably should buy a pound of something cause I really want to try a sample of that!

I'm in, always curious to try something strange, and I know I already love this method of processing tobacco, as long as the base tobacco is a good one I can see it getting real popular.

Funny this subject comes up today ... I just processed one of my carrottes made 3 seasons ago for smokeless tobacco this morning! They're quite easy to grate using the smallest setting on a regular cheese grater ... although if you're going to process any in bulk then I'd suggest using a grater blade on a food processor to give your arm a rest! Grating gives you something a little larger in grain size than tobacco flour which ends up to a consistency similar to that of american long-cut dip when processed in to a smokeless.

The tasting and aroma notes are exactly in keeping with how mine turned out ... nutty with a slight tinge of fermentedness, almost molasses smell with some spices. Not only is this an excellent way to process tobacco in a way that keeps your storage space needed to a minimum ... you can actually do this with leaves which have cured a little bit green and they will colour up in the carrotte just fine ... it's also brilliant for people curing in less than perfect autumn conditions as once you have bound the leaf very tightly it can hang in a tiny fraction of the space the loose leaves would take up meaning you can take your whole crop indoors to a nice dry place.

The tobacco itself makes an excellent rich flavoured snus either by itself or blended with other tobacco flours.

Hard to tell from that picture, but I know what you mean. I imagine if it was processed with green in the outer leaves then it would stay that way - but in the middle where the pressure has been doing it's work it would have gone a rich dark chocolate brown.

Put hydrated carrotte in a ziplock plastic and heat up to 120F for few hours and it will loosened. You can help it with your hands but don't force it too much. It will go apart slowly.

The rolls in the photos look like traditionally-bound Rustica bundles. I've seen similar ones that have come from the more 'jungle-ly' areas of South America. I was able to try some years ago and vividly remember it knocking me on my a**. From what I was told, the tobacco in these bundles is either smoked or ground into a crude nasal snuff. Either way, it's usually used as an entheogen (a substance that helps people see and interact with gods or spirits around them) or a simple intoxicant. In areas that have deep shamanic traditions, this type of tobacco is often used in conjunction with native, hardcore substances like Ayahuasca (a mind-altering brew made from a specific Amazonian vine). In any case, it's just a fascinating example of how different cultures process tobacco and how the cultural meanings of tobacco use can vary dramatically. We use tobacco to relax and enjoy life while, just a few thousand miles away, people use it to communicate with the supernatural!

Also, FmGrowit, since I plan on putting in an order in a day or two, my I request a small sample in the order... pretty please with sugar on top!

I turned my sample into a snuff, it's still aging though so haven't really sampled.
