Title kind of says of all. Who doesn't love Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake or McClelland Blackwoods Flake? Any ideas on getting in the ballpark?

I would use a blend of Whole Leaf Tobacco's Red Virginia and Bright Virginia. That would be great.

Purchased leaf: Virginia Bright and "Red" Virginia. Both are flue-cured. Stem and shred them, blend, then press. Slice the press-cake into flake, then optionally rub-out.

To get the "sweet, black" component of McClelland's Blackwoods, perform a Cavendish steaming process on some of the Lemon.

For pressing, just about any improvised means of compression for a few days will work (e.g. put leaf into a freezer Zip-lock, then press between the countertop and a stack of books).

Home grown leaf: Plant Virginia Bright Leaf. You will need to flue-cure it (search the forum). Lower leaf will provide the Lemon Virginia, while upper leaf will provide the red.

However you go about making this, it will be free of the famous McClelland "ketchup" taste that is the result of their casing.

And welcome to the forum. Feel free to introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself forum.

Also, FTT member Jojjas has made many professional quality flake blends.
