This curious study indicates that some of the sunlight striking plant leaves is transmitted through the vascular bundles of the plant stem, in a fashion similar to a firer-optic cable, down to the roots. Roots contain functioning photoreceptors which affect how the roots grow and behave.

What is the implication of this? I don't know. But it's fun to think about.

This study was performed on Arabidopsis spp. Further studies will be performed on Nicotiana alata.

Interesting article and interesting source. Virginia Tech is 10 miles from my house. They've done tobacco research for over a century. These days, the tobacco researchers have to provide some non-tobacco, medical or agricultural justification for their work.
