Hello.

On a 1942 book, I find that:

N. Tabacum L., Tobacco, of American origin, grows with
Remarkable vigor in New Caledonia; The Deli varietal was
Very well acclimatized and the varietals Java and Kentucky gave
Good results especially in La Foa since 1910.

It wasn't very specific, but what do yout think the "Deli varietal" is?

(they are no longer any tobacco field on the Island)

123 leaves and 5 meters high is certainly a monster tobacco plant!

As it says in the article, Deli is originally of Sumatra, which is an Indonesian island. Both Sumatra and Java are Indonesian islands. I suppose they got to New Caledonia through the United States, but "of American origin" I would say is probably incorrect. As it says in that very article, "these plants appeared in the second year's planting from seed obtained from Sumatra".

Thanks.

My first post refer to this 1942 french book:
http://www.persee.fr/doc/jatba_0370-3681_1942_num_22_245_1674

That wasn't about tobacco, but imported plants and varietals in New Caledonia.

I bet "Tobacco, of American origin" is a general historic remark.

So "Deli Tobacco" in the french book refer probably to sumatra seeds from the Indonesian Deli company, if I understand you well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deli_Company

The "giant tobacco" article was a funny side founding when I was searching for "Deli Tobacco" ^^

That is quite right.
For more reading material in English, please visit this page:

Look for the part where it explains about Jacob Nienhuys purchasing land in the Deli region.
From there onward it strart talking about the tobacco.
I'm afraid that the more detailed writings on Deli (and all other Indonesian tobacco varieties) is in Dutch.
Nevertheless, this piece is at least a bit more detailed than you will find on Wikipedia.

I've been to this region, but unfortunately that was before my interest in tobacco...

The famed Sumatra cigar wrappers were known as Deli leaf, I believe named for the Deli River region of Sumatra. The Deli No. 3666 varietal that I grew resembled a wrapper variety in general conformation, but the plant size and leaf size were quite small.
