Greenmonster. Hows your grow going? I enjoyed reading your posts, and watching your progress, but see you haven't posted in 2 weeks. Did you get your aphid problem squared away?? Are you priming any leaf yet??

Thought I'd throw in a few lines here and check in with you guys. I see many great gardens going on in here and wish I could have joined in the harvest. My grow this year has withered away and died. All I could do is watch it die. My breathing problems got so bad that even eating was exhausting. My lung specialist did some testing and found my lungs are functioning at 45% and the left side is pretty scarred up. He said it is severe copd and gave me strick orders to stay inside until they figured out a med to get this stuff under control. So, all my hard work is for not this year. But, I am pleased to say that today I am a bit better and seemed to have found a drug that works. By no means am I one hundred percent but after the past few months I'll take it. The past week or so I've been able to get outside and at least enjoy some fresh air and am slowly working my way up with some breathing excersizes the dr instructed me to do.

Next season I hope to get some plants out but I can assure you it will be a lot less than what I had out there this year. I see now that this issue of mine can be managed so it should not get in my way next year. So, I guess I'll just save a few dollars and order some leaf from the wlt store. Was hoping to only need some latakia from there but I guess that has changed a bit...lol. I've truely missed hanging out in the forums and plan on jumping back into the mix. I do enjoy learning from you folks and I certainly have learned a lot. Gotta say it has been a huge disappointment this year but sometimes ya just gotta shut it down and take care of your body. Ya'll take care and I'll catch ya in the threads.

I am also happy to hear you're doing better than before. I'm just going to come out and say it though. I think it would be best for your health if you quit smoking altogether. Hate to lose you here, but hate to lose you everywhere, even more.

Thanks guys, its good to be back. I guess now is the time to start figuring out a small garden for next season. A few air cure types for the pipe and some dip.

Thank you CV. What a nice thing to say. I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon. Since all this lung issue crap has been going on I have turned to the snuff. I do love my pipe but since I don't smoke in the house I've not been able to partake. I never inhale tobacco anymore. Gave up cigarettes over 8yrs ago. I honestly doubt I will ever give up the nicotine. So, the plan for next season is a few types for the pipe and one or two for the dip snuff. Not much but just enough to let me play around with some blending.

My very basic pipe recommendations are:
  • purchase Lemon Virginia from WLT (so you don't have to flue-cure any leaf)
  • purchase Latakia from WLT (you can't make it, regardless)
  • grow Harrow Velvet (mild burley)
  • grow Prilep 66-9/7 (prolific and rich Oriental)
  • also plan to make Perique and Cavendish from the Harrow Velvet
Actually, you could start a batch of Perique now, by grabbing a hundred or so leaves of any mix of varieties (doesn't matter much) that have mostly cured on the stalk already. Rip out the green stems, moisten (drench) and smush into a container, then tighten a clamp. Wait 3 months.

Awesome Bob. That'll work it down to just two or three strains to grow. I'm sure to handle that. Thanks

This idea has me a bit excited. I do still have standing tobacco in the backyard. I was planning on having the brother in law come over and disc it all under but maybe I'll have him help me pick some first. It doesnt really matter what type of tobacco it is so I can just go for it. Thanks

GM if your able to go outside and move about, as you say, go for it. Sounds like a nice easy fall project. Your health comes first tho.
