You'll have to excuse the mess. I've been busy with a lot of projects and just couldn't be bothered to clean up the deck too well. The green tarp is temporary. The clutch on my chainsaw broke before I could finish milling rafters for the roof. The sidewalls give us a bit of a wind and rain block and the open side faces the side of the house where we have a screen for a projector. Wear enough layers and sit in a sleeping bag and it makes for a tolerable winter smoking solution as we don't smoke in the house. It's functional if not pretty.

Getting back on topic, here's my first attempt at a poker type pipe.

How would you make one out of a shedded deer antler? The one I have has a big crack and teeth marks from the dog but if i get another one, it would be interestimg to make it into a pipe!

I went with the military bit idea, thanks Bob! I had a spent s&w 40 casing that fit the bill. Marrying it to the stummel was a bit ignorant and I expect to have to redo it down the line. But for now, the oak pipe is done and highly smokable indeed! Thanks for looking

It’s got a handsome rustic look to it.

Not sure oak is the best to be smoking out of, with the exception of bog oak. A lot of woods are pretty toxic, oak maybe less so -but still I don’t think it’s highly recommend (…when I say that I’m talking about by pipe makers, not the surgeon general).

I’d go with the more traditional materials, it’s not hard to get your hands on some briar, morta, olive wood, or cherrywood.

The oak is not toxic as a pipe bowl. It's somewhat porous. Once you establish a good carbon cake lining the bowl, I expect it to smoke well. (If wood porosity requires it, you can always spackle the interior of the bowl with a 50:50 mixture of plaster of Paris and fine sand. That makes just about any material fireproof and impervious.)

I appreciate your concern! I have a tough time growing briar and olive wood in my backyard, unfortunately for me. I wasn't too worried about oak, as they've used toasted/charred oak barrels to age wine and spirits for a good long time, but your caution is sensible enough as there are probably lots of poisonous woods out there.

In no particular order. I'm on my phone so it just shows me a list of every picture. The pipe with all the tins of tobacco was the first one I made for a friend. The lovat is my best VA/VaPer pipe and the one with a black palm ring is my do-it-all pipe that definitely does it all. The briar tube on the futuristic looking pipe is actually an expansion chamber like a reverse calabash and the pipe has interchangeable bowls like a Falcon pipe except with o-rings instead of threads. The Pipe with the steel tube for a shank I accidentally dropped out the window while on the highway but it was a good VA pipe as well. The cherry pipe developed a burn spot on the first smoke, but that's what happens when you don't sand down a tear out from your chamber bit needing sharpening. It looks like the picture of the pipe with two brass rings was taken before I finished the botton. The others were sold. I'm not an official pipe maker but have no need to keep everything I make with all the pipes I've got already and I like making things for friends of mine, especially the ones who keep telling me to open up an etsy page or something similar.

There are several others in various states of completion but life has been handing me some cards lately and I'm trying to figure out how to slice the lemons with them to get a start on making lemonade, plus I burned out something on the motherboard of the mini lathe I use for turning stems and need to send that off for a quick repair before getting back to making the dust fly

Plaster of Paris and fine sand...hmmm. Sounds moderately refractory.

Anyone know where I can get 200 grit sand? The finest I can get is 70 grit. Way too coarse.

I used a 50:50 mix of plaster of Paris and fine, white "craft" sand to line some pipe bowls. It's a recipe used by knifemakers to line their blast forges. I bought a jar of (unspecified grit) craft sand from Walmart's arts and crafts section. It works well, and the dried mix can be sanded smooth with garnet paper.

Bob

EDIT: I remembered incorrectly. I purchased the fine sand from Michael's Arts and Crafts:

I was wondering... did you folks boil briar or various woods before making a pipe out of them?
According to what I read and hear out there, briar at least should be boiled, and aged after that...
Now I have some nice aged briar, I'm tempted to make a try myself... will it work without boiling?
