The idea of Charly is good, it's a decoy :), I make the same witch my plants, i prefer to the insect eat the rustica thay my plants .
In conclusion it is a practice witch the "permaculture" has ma eyes .
Good evening :D

Do you need BT now? I'm in Maryland and hornworms do not show up till the last week in June. I would think you wouldn't have hornworms till July or so.

I had other caterpillar/ grub types chewing the stalk just at the soil level. I figure a little extra can't hurt.

I've been having trouble with slugs and snails since transplanting but I saw a toad in the tobacco patch last night so I'm hoping it will stick around and keep the crawlers at bay

Ha! I'd happily hook him up with a stogie or two if he stuck around until harvest

Lost another rustica to cutworms. Spreading some diatomaceous earth after work today, and spraying more BT since we've had 4 straight days of rain.

All the other plants are looking good. Sending up new leaves and reaching for the sun.

I use a lot of Diatomacous Earth (DE) every spring for my tobacco. The problem with it is that you have to reapply it every time after it rains. I'm not so sure you have cutworm damage. Usually cutworms will cut your plant off right at the base where it meets the ground. Your plants looks fairly big too for cutworms, but I have no other explanation as to what critter might be responsible.

I lost one tobacco plant to a cutworm. I found the little bigger. I also lost 4 basil plants, and had several tobacco, and tomato plants damaged by ants. The ants chew the bark around the base of the plant. As the tobacco and tomato grows, it's less of a problem. I spread ant bait, and replanted the basil, and they did the same within 24 hours. I should have waited for them to die before replanting.

Ants made a home right on the end of my row of Rustica. Thanks for all the input and advice.

I'm keeping every plant lightly dusted with DE, and I'm planning on alternating BT and Neem oil through the rest of the season.

Cornplanter seedlings are growing slowly but surely. At this rate they should be in the ground around august...

Your plants looked pretty leggy when you first planted them, but they've quickly turned themselves into healthy compact plants. All good.

Little bitty cornplanter rustica seedlings are in the ground. 15 more plants in the tobacco patch, and 40 more scattered throughout the wife's flower gardens. I showed her a picture and she liked the flowers :)

Those are some tiny things. Never seen them set out that small. A hard rain comes ya might consider some sort of protection for them or they will get pounded into the ground. Good luck to ya.
