8/21 36 days after topping. That's all folks. It is supposed to rain tomorrow so I harvested a day early. Bottom half has been primed and strung, so the stalks contain just the upper half.
Looks like I hit the picture limit anyway. Just a picture of cut down plants.

What a great season.

Field planted into roundup killed sod. As a wise man once said, "dirt is dirt."

The sod didn't have enough time for the roots to dissolve and the shadows on the east side were too much, next year I will do away with half the rows and just do 9 or 10, maybe cut some trees down too to get did of more shade.

But this year was amazing, a little too amazing I think sometimes. I'm going to be much more picky next year.

I'm really happy with the Olson 68. It's 6' tall, 5 without the crows foot. The growth habit is what I like so much about it. The yield is great for a rustica. It has smaller leaves than my behemoth Indian GC 1, but it has more leaves and the internodes are lengthened allowing easy access to suckers. It also has less ruffling than most Brasilia's making it less likely for crap to get caught in all the nooks and crannies.

Fantastic year, I might have north of 50lbs all cured out when it's all said and done. These sticks are just the top half of each plant, bottoms were primed or discarded.IMG_20170823_173817.jpg

It's 8 rows i think now since I took this older picture. The year was wet and cold at the beginning and cloudy for the most part after that and even so I can't wrap my mind over how well it ended up going.

I'm looking forward to going back here when the stalks are ready to be stripped. Even the rustica didn't suck this year.

That's corn in the background, thank you Mr. Olson!

Olson really is a winner! I'm pumped for next year when I can get mine transplanted earlier.

Yup, I might still mess around with the odd exotic rustica strains that pop up from time to time but I don't think anything is going to beat this for production. The only thing that kept me from producing more rustica was because i had so many non Olson's. I harvested about 40 pounds wet weight of leaf, it yellowed super easy and was a joy to work with at all stages of growth.

I dried a couple leaves out that were nearly solid golden colored in a 150 degree oven while I strung all the leaf, powdered it up in a snuff recipe a took a couple toots and was in heaven.

I couldn't be more happy with the strain.

It kind of reminds me of flue cured. It was maybe 98%solid golden color with dots of green up against the veins. The veins near the rib and the rib itself were still moist so I crumbled the dry lamina off that and powdered it. It did not have a flavor or odor as or had just been toasted, but I will say it lacked any hint of raw vegetal flavor/scent which is common with green leaf or leaf that still has a high % of green in with the brown as in the case with something that dried too fast.

I was actually so impressed with it I found myself wishing I'd done more like that, I might do my last Olson with seeds like that and have a single plant batch.

Actually that's exactly what I'll do, then I'll have an idea how much 1 whole plant weighs - moisture. Thanks for asking that and getting me to think about that heh
