I'm Brad, been chewing Redman for 30 years. Looking at making my own chew from whole leaf.May eventually get into growing.First couple of tests making leaf chew is from some old cigars I had that I didn't take care of, dried out.Brought the moisture content back up, chopped them up, and the chew came out pretty darn good. Can really taste the tobacco after a while andits not quite what i'm looking for yet.Anyway, have been learning a lot from the site, and now am looking to get some whole leaf of a couple different varieties to try and get my chew to something that is outstanding. I think the cigar blends are not quite right for chewing.Have had good luck with the recipes I've found on this site, and tweaking them to what I think will be good. The flavor has been great, just after an hour or so, it gets a little bitter. Thanks for any, and all help.

Welcome to the forum. If you're like a lot of folks here, you'll eventually only be satisfied with whole leaf. You'll probably soon know more about tobacco than anyone you know in real life, too.

Best of luck in your blending.

Most likely be hitting up @BigBonner for some of his leaf to try out.

His Havana makes a really good chew. I believe he said that's actually what Redman uses. It's a bit thin though, so I mix it with some Dark Air, which is stronger, both in nicotine and leaf sturdiness.

Good luck! Loose leaf is pretty easy to make.

Welcome on FTT,
I don't use chew tobacco, so I won't have any advice, but some other folks here will be happy to share their knowledge ! ;)

Welcome to the forum. Consider a "decorative" grow (like 16 plants of one or two varieties) for next year, which would involve germination in Feb or Mar, if you are not ready to jump into the deep end. It seems like you are in a promising location for growing. Details are in the FAQ.

Tossing that idea around. We very seldom get a frost here, so it wouldn't be to hard to germinate at anytime.
Except summer here is killer hot.

You might PM ArizonaDave, who survives in Phoenix, and see what growing season he has figured out for his desert environment.

Welcome to the forum. I'm currently growing Havana 142 for cigars. I recall hearing that this variety was also grown specifically for Red Man.
Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome, and the info.

As soon as I figure out pics posting, I'll post a couple pics of what I think is "wild" tobacco I came across last weekend in the higher country between here and San Diego.

With its yellow blossoms, it may be Nicotiana rustica, rather than the common wild types of Nicotiana attenuata and Nicotiana bigelovii, which are predominant in that region.

Some of the plants had these large pods. And on a couple, the pods were dried and opened revealing large seeds with white "feathers".

And a couple leaves that I got to help identify.

Looks like Milk Weed to me , Asclepias asperula

It very well could be, when I pulled a lower leaf off, it had a large amount of sticky milky liquid.

The plant looks like a tobacco plant, the leaves were smaller and quite thick. But I only have pics to compare it to.

My first attempt at chew was a disaster. The mixture came out like pudding, and the tobacco was completely dry.
Here's a pic of the second batch.
Apple juice, molasses, sea salt, and veggie glycerin.
Tobacco was still dry. Flavor was good, texture wasn't.

Pic of third batch.
Apple grape and prune juice. Molasses, sea salt and glycerin.
This time I brought the moisture level up in the tobacco.
Flavor and texture are good.
Fourth trial is in the jar now, playing with different amounts of each juice to get to where I want it. Now just need to get the right variety of tobacco to get there.
