I usually do not join forums, But that Damm puppy was driving me Crazy when I was trolling around.
So here I am.
I have put in about 1250 plants so far.
Havana Gold, Va 509, Va 309,Rustica, Turkish, VA Gold
Well as my screen name says I can not grow crap without everything going wrong.
I hope to get a carton out of this crop.
I started with horse compost about 6 inches deep rototilled in twice.
Plastic and driplines.
Why is my 509 turning Yellow?. The bugs are having a Field day
I sprayed with Sevin , Then Dusted with Diatomaceous, Then Triazide. I hope it is there last meal.
They are driving me Crazy!!
Any Input would be appriciated.
Thanks, Tom
Sorry about my poor grammer I have only one good hand.

we have a good group of growers here,, so feel at home,

your garden lay-out sounds very effeciant,,

what type of '' bugs'' are you talking about,?

hornworms,??

and that yellowing will go away as the plant matures,

I have no idea on what type of bug. I never see anything on them during the day.
When I sprayed the triazicide I saw lots of spiders and ants running for there lives.HPIM2066.JPGHPIM2061.JPGHPIM2065.JPGHPIM2063.JPG

Slugs / Snails .

Ditto!
Get some Sluggo. It is Iron Phosphate with a bran coating ( acts as a bait/attractant). Works great, but like most organic solutions requires periodic applications. Also, put down more Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Cover the plant with a light coating as well as the ground. I didn't see any evidence of DE on your plants, maybe your photo's were taken before you applied it?

Welcome, Brown Thumb,
Man, you are a bigger glutton for punishment than I am! This is my first year growing tobacco too, but I only have 400 in the ground and 100 to go. Is it possible that your plants are too wet? They don't seem to like it overly wet...that is not the bug problem...I have a little of the same damage on mine and am considering putting hydrated lime on the ones with the damage to see if that helps.

the yellowing could be a nitrogen deficiancy,

but i swayed away from that when i read you have horse manure tilled in.

from what ive read { never tried it } some yellowing like that can be helped, with a EPSOM SALT mixture,

me personally i think the yellowing forms from being in a seed tray too long,,,

because once i put them in the ground,,,all yellowing seems to go away as '' that yellow'' leaf dies,

and then lush green foilage begins to start

I will give some of that snale stuff a try.
I tilled the garden in last fall then put the crap down and tilled in, let sit and weed over then tilled in again so it was rained on pretty good.
It is only the va509 that is turning yellow and that is in both gardens upper one and lower one.
When I planted they were nice and green like these backups I have for when I get these tobacco eating critters under control.
I was thinking too wet also we had a lot of rain and I forgot to turn the dripline off one night.
HPIM2059.JPGBut it has not changed in over a week of no water.

Thanks All for the Warm Welcome and replys. Bigbonner was correct. It is slugs eating my crop up.
I put a teaspoon of ortho something or other, next to each plant and checked them the next day and found two dead and two on the leaves with a belly ache. I have never even seen them before this.
It has been raining here for the last couple of days so the yellowing on the VA509 is getting worse.
So I think that problem is water.
Thanks, Again for the input.
