I agree!
I made a pipe last year out of Olive wood. I even made an olive wood stem for it on my lathe. The only coating I've ever put on it is ....olive oil.
I think if you are burning tobacco inside a pipe the oils need to go somewhere. Maybe that's why meerschaums are so nice. They don't stink while setting on a shelf.

Yesterday my buddy and I were ribbing, shredding and making cigs for him and his wife. We were using my Top-O-Matic. He complained that even with the rubber pad on the bottom it still slid around. This started a quick trip to the shop. I found a piece of 3/4 plywood about 12" X 18". At the right end I nailed a quick frame to hold the machine in place. The back stick of the frame was dadoed so that when nailed in place the machine was held down. We finished up by cementing a piece of black rubber like shelf matting to the bottom of the whole works so it wouldn't slide around. The first test was a total success. Now he has one hand operation and the left hand is busy getting tobacco and tube for the next one. Like me he is a modeler and he is playing with a sloped chute to be clipped on top of the machine to hold tobacco enough for several cigs. When it is all done I will get pics. I'd attach a pic but he had to go home for supper and took the rig with him.

He's an inventive fellow and showed me a trick he uses with the cig tube box. Instead of opening it in the usual way he cuts the end of the box so that when he sets it on end the tubes roll out one at a time right where he wants them. The vibration of the table as he cranks out a cig is generally enough to dispense another tube.No more fumbling in the box and crushing tubes.

He puts finished cigs in the empty tube box which he keeps in a humidor. When he or the wife want cigs they take then from the box and fill their cig cases.

I promised I'd post pics of the Top-O-Matic on it's new base and the tobacco chute. Here they areIMG_1605 - Copy.JPGIMG_1606 - Copy.JPGThe chute holds enough tobacco for about a pack. The large base with the non slip pad makes the handle pull a one hand operation. Just watching he is already using the left hand to do loading operations and has about doubled his output. He says it is easier also. Here he is making lights for his lady and and full flavor for himself.

First cigar.jpg

Chaveta made from curved cabinet scraper. All I had to do was sharpen it. The steel is awesome. Rolling board made from rough sawn walnut. I left the bark on the edges. Also, my first cigar.

I've been looking for a nice slab of wood for a rolling board for cigars and today I was at walmart picking up a few things, and they have a clearance or discount isle, and this wooden tv tray had a nick on top and was marked 3 bucks.
I know it's not teak wood or anything high end, but for 3 bucks, it's my rolling board now.
Their only $8.44 plus tax new, and no problem to remove hardware and use just the top.
Should last awhile till something better comes up.
Just thought I would post it if anyone is looking for something inexpensive to start off with.

That's what I use to mount my pasta maker to. Although I haven't found a way to do it for hours without killing my back. I was just thinking yesterday that I would use it to roll cigars on; my girlfriend is getting mad at me for using the coffee table all the time.

Just thought I'd post my $4.29 (Harbor Freight saw blade) chaveta with my $3.00 tv tray cutting board, I beveled the edge with grinder and then used knife sharpener on it. Took about 15 minutes to throw together but it works!
The cigar in ash tray and the 2 cigars closest to the saw blade are rolled with scrap filler from Havana 142, and Maryland 609, with a Maryland 609 binder and fire cured wrapper, It smoked nice and I liked the taste. I only got about 4985 more cigars to roll before I get close to Deluxestogie.

You realize you voided the warranty on that saw blade don't you??
Otherwise.. nice job on the chaveta.
How did you cut the blade in half?

Nice work Chris. How do you like the curve? It seems to me as though you can get longer cuts than I can if you rock the blade thru 180°. Do you like/use that feature? If you add a bit of rubber or Tygon hose to the back edge it may be more comfortable to use. Good looking cigars. If they smoke the way you like you can say mission accomplished. -- John

Nice blade and cigars Chris. Good job. I hope my cigars will start looking like that after a few dozen more! Was that a plywood blade?

Thanks Randy, I used my 4-1/2 body grinder with a metal cutoff blade on it to cut in half.
I think it came with a California warranty, If it breaks in 2, I own both pieces.

Thanks John, I tried scissors, buck knife, pizza cutter, but this works great, and I do like/use the large curve, most of my time making cigars before was leaf prep, not any more.

Thanks Markw, I only got about 15 minutes in it, took longer to go and buy it (saw blade) than to make it.

Thanks Akh, The cigars aren't the best looking but at least they smoke now and stay lit. And yes, it's a plywood blade, 142 tooth I think.

Thanks Leverhead, I just drew a line down center and with the cutoff blade moved from top to bottom and made a slight groove on the line, then just move up and down the line till you cut through it, I had a wet rag ready, but moving up and down, keeping it moving it never got hot enough to blue it, just cut through it, with no wet rag.

Thank you Bob, It gets a little easier with each one I roll.
