In France too, they changed all the packs of tobacco, they now all look the same, with the same ugly brown color, with a big ugly picture of some disease and a big health warning message. The brand/product name is written in small letters.

We live in a crazy world, so many things don't go in the right way...

Well...that's pretty disgusting.

Just thinking out loud here...but who's going to pay all those taxes after everyone quits smoking? Oh...that's right...the sugar tax is next. (Seattle already has this.) Fat taxes have been proposed. (Look out McDonalds) Soon it will be the "air" tax. No unauthorized breathing you wretched scofflaw!

You keep on growing that evil tobacco, and help your friends establish those gardens too!

Couldn't agree more...but, that's what you get with a socialist government...nanny state!

It's completely ridiculous and, an obvious tax grab.

If the government were actually serious about a smoke free country, they would have given smokers a 6 month deadline to sign up as a smoker, and we could then buy our tobacco at a dispensary (maybe a pharmacy), and then the government could have removed ALL tobacco products from sale...

Now THAT is a more realistic, and fairer way of eradicating smoking.

Well...this isn't my blog, so I won't clutter it up with my right wing politics. Suffice it to say I strongly disapprove of the nanny state.

My grow Log appears to be ‘lost in translation’

Somewhere on Page 1, I posted the below taken 3 and a half weeks ago.

Well they now look like this:

october_26_2018.jpg

I have separated around 250 plants so plenty of spares in case they fall over when I plant them out :)

If they don’t I shall have a lot of plants and no where to put them.

Hopefully I have conned a friend into letting me use some of his garden space. I just have have to con him into watering them as well :sneaky:

What is going to hurt is throwing out a couple of trays with probably 500 healthy plants that were my starter trays. But I have to be realistic, I have no where for them.

My gardens are now full of compost, sawdust, mulched leaves and vegetation plus fresh lawn clippings. Shade cloth has been erected and my longer, wider irrigation system complete.

Rain is forecast for the next few days so it might be time I started planting out.

Cheers

Harden your heart! Each tobacco plant produces 1/4 million seeds. If it thought all its babies would survive, it might slack off a bit on that seed production thing. But tobacco is smart. It knows that it needs one or two seeds (~1 per 100,000) to make it to adulthood, in order to have done its procreative duty. So it's expecting you to toss all those extras. Don't disappoint your tobacco.

Looking good! Is that a spoiled kitty-cat in the background?

It's almost November here and I still have live tobacco in my garden. No killing frost in the 10-day forecast. One year back in the 1990's I didn't freeze out 'till the third week of November. There's no predicting it. Best wishes for your crop and yourself.

Hi Wes, thank you for checking up on me, nice :)
I was actually drafting my log when your post came through.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrying on from where I left off, I planted out around 100 plants. I left 2 sides of one garden empty as we were in the process of erecting a wind break fence.
This proved to be disastrous.
  • 2 days later we were hit with a storm with High 70km Wind Gusts and heavy rain. That flattened many of my plants. So I replaced the ones that were tattered and torn. October and early November were cold and growth was minimal.
  • 2 days after that the birds decided they loved my compost in the garden and began digging it up looking for worms. Needless to say they dug up my plants as well and I was left with empty holes as the sun just melted them. Remind me next year to cover the compost with fresh soil huh.
  • I replaced all the missing ones and tried to convince my husband to stand in the middle of my garden and flap his arms. You can imagine his response (n)
  • When the holes for the supporting poles were dug. I ended up with this horrible clay/sand stuff over 2 sides of my garden. Once the posts were planted I then had to move that horrible clay/sand stuff off again so I could plant the finals rows of plants. I have a round 130 plants and that is probably enough for me to deal with.
  • Following that, holes started to appear on my leaves. Initially stupid me thought it was snails as they eat everything else in my garden. So I sprinkled snail bait up and down the rows. But the holes continued to appear to the point I once again replaced a few plants.
  • Looking at my veggies I suddenly realised it may be aphids and yep it sure was. Strange, as these wee creatures did not appear last year until the plants were much bigger. So with a spray bottle full of detergent and water, up and down the rows I went again spraying each. That did the trick, aphids now gone and my plants are very clean.
  • In amid my woes I managed to break my Shredder Mk2. Now that really displeased me. Thankfully I had plenty of tobacco already shredded otherwise going down to the dairy would have hurt big time. I have now acquired a second hand shredder which is a 0.7 fine cut as opposed to my Mk1 and Mk2 which were a 0.8 cut. I prefer the finer cut so far. My Mk2 shredder is currently undergoing comb and roller surgery.
I became somewhat demoralised through all this but I appear to have the upper hand now (y)
My plants are growing, my sprinkler system is effective and my wind break fence is a beauty. Note the paint job on the 4th photo. It appears I now need to paint the background property fence also.

Thank goodness I had grown far more plants than I required otherwise you would have heard the sobs from ways up there

You're a trooper! The plants look good. The more difficult the journey, the greater the satisfaction in the end.

I don't know which way is North, in that last photo. If the taller, background fence gets sun exposure, I would be inclined to paint it white, to increase the light within the garden. The darker color increases the heat. But your ?shade? cloth suggests you may be trying to reduce the light.

Nice...

Raining here (manawatu). I've just finished digging over my new plot, and put down the weed mat...

My seeds have finally sprung into action this week, doubling in size every day...

About this size now...maybe a fraction bigger...

I should have something big enough to 'plant out' next week...or the week after...

looking for at least 30 plants this year, 3x what I grew last year (and that lasted me about 7 months)...
