It's supposedly a filter or condenser. Some people swear by them. There are a few brands of pipes that have their own version. Brigham has one made from maple. Savinelli uses balsam wood. Medico uses something like the MMs.
Yep, MM uses Medico filters... very cheap. I prefer to smoke without a filter but replacements are available. I tried H shaped balsa filters sold by Aristocob, and they are much better than the paper ones.
The Medico-style filters are particularly helpful when smoking gooey, overcased, commercial aromatics, since they soak up a lot of that. For pure tobacco, using the pipe without the filter seems better to me. I have bunches of MM corncobs, and never use the filters.
Ditto for the metal "condensers" in many older mass-marketed pipes.
Thanks I’m just loving this pipe, the captain black “blonde” , 1 of few types available locally in PEI ($30) is delicious actually. The other types available are Borkum riff which I don’t seem to like, and captain black “red wine” which I haven’t tried. I find myself breathing it in through my nose intentionally is this standard practice?
I intentionally take in a little secondary smoke when using a pipe. Just seems like a natural thing to do. I find myself doing this with cigars as well.
I just can't deal with the filters. I guess they do have a purpose but I find a pipe more enjoyable without one. Even morso with a MM cob. I love the airflow you get with a cob. It seems that if I use the filter it obstructs that great flow.
I have a few MM cobs with filters. I do not like the filter so I take it out. The problem is the draw is almost non-existent due to the large opening. I just cut a pipe cleaner about 2 inches long, bend it and put it in place of the filter and...perfect draw
