I love the red grain pipe. Nice very nice. I'm going to spend some time at his blog. It is pretty detailed. I can't get the widget to translate the language so I may have to just use the google translate thing. Lots of pics.

Wow really nice work! I'm trying to find a source for good stems I love the pearlized lucite stems.

If you have a lathe to cut your own stems, search for "pen blanks" on Google. You can buy pen blanks for $2-5.00 in any color pearlescent lucite/acrylic you like. I'm not aware of anyone who supplies ready-made stems in pearl colors, though.

Of course, you can always find one of us who has a lathe to shape and fit a stem for you, if you aren't equipped. Or you could adapt a drill press to work as a lathe, which is how I got hooked.

Thanks Sid. Here is another source where I've bought acrylic pen blanks to use for pipe stems. This company seems to be a good deal cheaper. I purchased one of their "grab bag" boxes that are available from time to time, and got a huge selection of acrylics and wooden pen blanks that have all kinds of uses in pipemaking, from stems to shank extensions and decorative rings.

Thank you a lot sir! Fantastic e-shop! :)

Some really nice pipes. Not some. All are beautiful.
Para poli oreo... Stavros, do you smoke cigars also?

Hvala moj prijatelj, zelo prijazno od tebe!

I was smoking cigars for 6-7 years, not something expensive because i didn't had internet those days and i couldn't buy from an outside Greece source. Now the things changed and i really want to smoke a cigar again especially in a Cafe close to the beach. My wife says that the most beautiful picture of me is one with a smile and a cigar in my hand, the resolution was low [cell phone at 90's] but she still loves that photo.

I had this little Big Ben pipe dedicated to heavy aromatic tobaccos as Winslow, below as it was:

after some simple restoration with an acrylic ring added now looks like this:

[QUOTE = OldDinosaurWesH; 139316] Quel sont les bois utilisés dans la fabrication de tuyaux? Il y a beaucoup de belles pipes là-bas.

That pipe is gorgeous, Sid! I've been playing with similar bands using stone where you used acrylic. I love the look. A small ring of color between the shank and stem really makes pipes look unique.

What are some of the woods used in pipe manufacture? There are a lot of beautiful pipes out there.

Wes H.

By far the most common is Erica Arborea, also known as the Heath Tree, and the wood from that plant is commonly known as "briar." But there are lots of other woods that can make suitable pipes. Most fruit woods will make suitable pipes without giving your tobacco any odd flavors. Fruit wood roots are favored, but the branches and trunks are also used. The first pipe I bought, thirty years ago, is made from Pear root, and I'm still smoking it routinely.

During World War I, when briar was difficult to obtain from the Mediteranean area, American pipemakers switched to using manzanita on the west coast and Mountain Laurel on the east coast. I have a Mountain Laurel pipe from that era that smokes as nicely as any briar.

I've also made several pipes from Russian Olive burl, and they smoke nicely too. Sadly, the lovely Russian Olive burl is nearly impossible to find on the market. I got lucky and harvested a huge burl that grew in my grandparents' yard. Here's the best pipe I've made from it:
