After a major failure in getting my seedlings to grow past 2" tall I abandoned my 2017 grow which was to be my last depending on the results. I decided to give it another go and this year I plan to do a bucket only grow using Miracle Grow potting soil instead of garden soil with fert mixed in it. In the previous years I grew some tobacco in buckets and some in the garden, buckets used the same garden soil. The results in terms of growth were pretty good, I think I primed the plants too soon though not sure but I plan to go a bit longer between primings this time around.

I'm deciding on growing either Olor or PA Red or mix of both.

Question, if I use Miracle grow would I ever need to add fertilizer during the growing season or is the preloaded fert in Miracle enough to get good leaf production ?

Thanks

Good luck for this new year ;)
If your plants (cigar strains from what I read) did not grew taller than 2 feets high in full soil (with a little bit of fertilization), I think something might be wrong, it can come from a lot of factors : either the place is not good, not enough sun, trees too close, too much (or not enough) of one of the nutrients for example ? or maybe planted too close ? too much/not enough water ? ...

If you try to grow in pots, be sure to give them a big pot, or they will stay small.

They didn't get past the seedling stage last year 2 inches tall. I used 5Gallon buckets successfully in the past.

Heading towards the end of the 7th week and they are growing rapidly especially in the last 5 days. Weather in Vancouver has been extremely good, high teens/low 20's (C) during the day mid teens at night, hardly any rain, only sunshine.
Nothing major to report, some seedlings got dried out and died, some didn't germinate and other still yet to take off. By the looks of it I may get 12 plants this season which is along the lines of what I wanted to grow.
The wife took up most of the garden space with useless crops , lettuce, beans, tomatoes etc. This year will be mostly a bucket grow and there maybe I can find a spot for 2 or 3 plants on the ground.

I think two more weeks and they go outside, I've been taking them out during the day and bringing them back in at night but I think I'll start leaving them out to acclimatize.
Next 10 day forecast indicates a bit chillier low teens at night.

I've never clipped the leaves off , is that recommended ? Better root growth ?

A little "hair cut" is good for them, it makes them grow stronger, with more roots and help them when you transplant them in the ground.
It is said to make them produce more nicotine too.

Lol ! "Useless crops" :D :D

I was wondering if anyone would catch that :)

Hair cut it is, I'll need to try that.

I was planning to plant outside this weekend but I see the weather turning a bit cool , below 10C (50F) at night and mid to high teens (C) , 60-61F Monday-Wed next week.
Should be okay but wondering if change of weather for a few days will shock the plants ?

Should be okay, the plants are big enough and won't die and I do need to get them out of the pots soon.

Thanks

No time last weekend to do this and rain for the next week and a half !
The current pots are getting too small and the roots are visible through the drainage holes.

I'm going to plant in the buckets this week and put them under the deck until the rain stops.

Vancouver weather is not the best for gardening, very unpredictable temp changes and precipitation.
I notice my peppers flowering already, Rosemary and Oregano as well.

They are growing however I've noticed the top leaves getting thicker and wrinkly and sticky.
From the close up picture is that looking like it's going to flower already, don't remember seeing leaves that close together until end of the season when it's starting to bud ?

What is your source of dirt?
How have they been fertilized?
What variety are you showing?
What is the water source? (Hard water?)

Soil is about a mix of 1/3 Miracle Grow Potting mix, 1/3 Garden Soil and 1/3 Sea Soil (I had some left over)

Sea Soil
Organic Matter: 67.96%
Maximum Moisture: 57.8%
Total Nitrogen 2.1%
Available Phosphoric Acid (P2O5): 0.16%
Soluble Potash (K2O): 0.05%

I haven't fertilized, there should be enough nutrients in the soil already for most of the growing period.
Plants are Pa Red and Olor.
Water source is tap water left outside in buckets in the sun.
