Many of the fresh fruits you purchase have been sprayed with wax. Most maxes are non-toxic. Before polyethylene sandwich bags, Mom always wrapped a sandwich in wax paper. Paper drinking straws are coated with wax, and biodegradable coffee cups are coated with it.

What ought to make your hair bristle is the casual mention (on page two) of diethylene glycol, to keep the tobacco nice and pliable. It is poisonous (causing acute renal tubular necrosis), and is used to make common automotive antifreeze.

US patents over the past century are loaded with all sorts of cigarette chemistry. The distinctive aroma of Old Gold cigarettes was due to its content of beeswax.

EDIT: Hidatsa Indian elders (the only tribal members who smoked) would lightly fry the tobacco in bear grease.

I think collecting the bear grease would have been way more dangerous than smoking the tobacco!

I was told that there are 49 different things that are federally approved to add to cigarettes. Isn't glycol used to promote combustion? (uniform burning).

You are using the present tense. I have no idea what's approved today.

Glycerol (glycerin) is used as a humectant and antifungal. Polypropylene glycol is used similarly. You can drink polypropylene glycol. Diethylene glycol ingestion can be fatal.

EDIT: If you'd like to squander a portion of your life looking at all the bizarre stuff that's gone into tobacco over the years, you can search the "Truth Tobacco Industry Documents" on the UCSF website: https://www.industrydocumentslibrary.ucsf.edu/tobacco/ There are hundreds of thousands of pages of "insider" info. There is even a section of tobacco industry videos.
