A question about tobacco tastes and shades

I recently read in an old article that Rocky Patel uses/used one variety of tobacco almost exclusively. He "ferments" or kilns (for us homegrowers) his tobacco for different time periods to achieve the different taste, aroma, and colors that he uses in his cigar blends for filler, binder, and wrapper. Is this feasible or is this a joke? Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated...
