I've always enjoyed hookah, but only like once every three years. And as I'm a white guy in the American South, it's not really culturally available like it might be for areas or demographics, so I've never seriously considered buying one. But, if I could grow my own tobacco blends and flavor them, I would consider purchasing one. Has anyone here grown or blended or flavored their own shisha? If so, is it hard to cure/blend/flavor? Does it use it's own distinct types of tobacco compared to cigarettes/cigars/pipes, non-smokables, etc?

My (very limited) understanding of hookah tobacco is that in the Middle East, Tombac leaf, a variety from Isfahan, Iran, is the common tobacco ingredient, but that bright leaf is now much more commonly used in hookahs, outside of the Middle East. Since the hookah tobacco is usually cooked and soaked in a sweet, flavored syrup, I would guess that the variety is not particularly important.

I have grown Shiraz, though not Tombac (from Isfahan). Judging from photos of Tombac plants, they appear to be similar, though definitely not the same. I would guess that a half-millennium ago, when tobacco was introduced into the Safavid Empire of Iran, that the variety grown in Isfahan and the variety grown in Shiraz were one and the same, and have been agronomically selected for different traits since then.

Does anybody here grow their own tobacco??? I thought it would be pretty cool to make all your own stuff, roll cigars, make shisha, and the works.

Welcome to the forum. Feel free to introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself forum. The New Growers' FAQ is all about growing tobacco. Scan our Index of Key Forum Threads for topics that may be of interest. Both are linked in the menu bar.
