Before I started hanging around here, I was perfectly happy with my commercial pipe tobacco blends. I’ve got over a dozen jars of various blends, including my beloved Balkans.

Then I grew some tobacco, which was fun. Then I cured it, which was a little tedious but rewarding. The. I smoked some of it. That’s where the problem really started. The tobacco is rough around the edges, not as good as the commercial stuff… BUT…

Now almost every time I light up a bowl of a commercial blend, even if I like it, I can tell there’s PG in it. The tobacco tastes good, but the PG gets more and more pronounced. Now that I know what it is and tastes/feels like, I actually notice it. There are a couple blends that have a lot less than most, and I can still enjoy those… for the most part. But I can tell I’m going to need to keep learning and blending my own.

So thanks, guys. Just what I need, yet another hobby!! Sheesh.

Sense organs are not particularly adept at reporting status (the current state), but are optimized for detecting change. When you walk out of your kitchen, and spend a hour outdoors, it's that return to the kitchen—the change—that tells you the kitchen garbage is starting to smell bad. That's why the self-reported "room note" of pipe tobacco blends is not particularly useful. You've got to ask your roommate or partner or spouse to get to the truth of it.

Unfortunately, with pipe tobacco, once you start to blend your own using whole leaf, it's hard to go back to the commercial stuff. Happy blending!
