knucklehead a bit more information if you could. I will next season (the opposite to yours)bag my flower heads on selected plants to keep the strain pure. You said the wind going through the bag wont aid pollination of the the flowers for seed and insects have been excluded. Have been googling pollination of tobacco plants and nothing is definitive in how they self pollinate.
Can each flower self pollinate itself or is it still from flower to flower.
I am now thinking that it must if it can self pollinate every flower has the capability to self pollinate. Am I right in this assumption?

A single Nicotiana tabacum blossom pollinates itself. In some varieties, this may mostly occur prior to the opening of the blossom. The bud head should be bagged before the blossoms open.

The dinky bags work well for Basma-type Orientals. My 30"h x 24"w bags (before stitching) are often filled to bulging with the heads of most cigar types.

BUT...Knucks has produced prodigious quantities of seed with the 5 gallon paint strainers on nearly 200 varieties. So success is where you make it.

I used the paint strainers last year (the 5 gal size). Worked well. Some flower heads were obviously to big, and swelled the bag like a basketball, but seed production seemed unaffected.

I used the reusable zip ties last year to fasten the bags around the stalk. That makes it much easier to reposition the bag higher up the plant as the bud head grows without having to use a new zip tie each time. It's also helpful to pull all the leaves from the bud head before putting on the bag. If the leaves are left on there they can grow big fast and really fill the bag and keep you from seeing what the seed pods are doing.
