Attempting to duplicate a proprietary blend is always a challenge. Tobacco Reviews states this:

Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia

"Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados."

As an "English" mixture, the Virginia, Oriental and Latakia will not make it "full bodied". That has to come from the mystery "brown Cavendish". I would begin by cooking Cavendish from a burley variety. My brain says "small Latakia" is 6.25% (totally wild guess). My starting point would be:
  • Burley Cavendish 50% (8 parts per 16)
  • Virginia flue-cured 25% (4 parts per 16)
  • Any Basma-type Oriental 18.75% (3 parts per 16)
  • Latakia 6.25% (1 part per 16)
Once you sample this guess, then begin to make adjustments. The choice of variety cooked into Cavendish will definitely impact the nicotine strength and the aroma. Other options for the Cavendish would be Maryland or dark air-cured. If using dark air-cured, I would start with the Cavendish as 25% of the mixture, adjusting the flue-cured and the Oriental upward, to compensate.

This is always a game. And it can be fun to discover something you enjoy.

Hello Stu,

I have a recipe for Petersons my mixture 965 in the pure pipe tobacco blends thread #944. I believe (from tasting test batches) the recipe is the name…”9” ounces/grams cavendish, “6” ounces/grams Latakia, “5” ounces/grams orientals (izmir). Also if I pressed it (3-4weeks) it’s as smooth as original.

Here is summary from thread #944:

569 pipe tobacco:

50% Flue cured Red Virginia Cavendish*
25% Latakia
25% Oriental (15% Samsun, 10% Izmir)

Pressed in my cheap ($4 on temu) stainless steel noodle press for 3 weeks.

Another version with a tad more Latakia taste. To make 20 ounces/grams of 569 is “9” ounces/grams of any cavendish, “6” ounces/grams of Latakia and “5” ounces of any oriental (Izmir).
