I don't know how many Canadian pipe smokers frequent this forum and have Brigham pipes but I thought I would share the Christmas present I received.
It is a book on the history of "Brigham" pipes.
It it written by Charles Lemon who repaired three pipes for me earlier this year. He can fix Brigham maple insert pipes and did a great job resorting on one of my patent pipes. He extracted and reused the old aluminum filter insert in the new stem so it is old and new very cool.
I have 11 Brigham pipes and remember visiting one of their stores quite often back in the day.
I read this in one sitting and found it very informative on a subject that I was already interested in.

Can you provide an ISBN for the book, or link to a site where it is available? My searches could not find it on Amazon or Thriftbooks.com.

Hi, wow very nice pipes I like the one dot at the bottom nice big bowl just looks like a cool smoke.
The one at the top looks like it has seven dots if so it could be a collector, the stamping is important.
The book has all the collective making systems for their pipes, even though Brigham did not keep very good records early.
I glad you enjoy smoking some of them as I do.

Definitely 7 dots on the stem, could be in the 700 series from de 7 dot system (1980-2001) but under the bowl it is wrote A506…

The Brigham pipes all appear to have a "rock maple insert". I've never seen one.
  • What does it look like?
  • How well does it work?
  • Does it need to be replaced?
  • Is it difficult to clean?

Hi Bob,
The Brigham pipes before the patent years had no filter. After the patent they produced some non filtered pipe that had to small a shank for the filter system.
Here is a pic of two of my Brigham's opened the bottom one has the filter inserted.
The filter has a aluminum tip and are made of rock maple because it is plentiful in Canada.

It works well at absorbing liquid.
Yes you have to replace the filter and they are not cheap.
Easy to clean.
You don't have to use a filter if you don't want to

Those filters are a dowel that has been drilled through, end to end. I know someone that saw the production. It's a wooden straw with a metal end to attach it to the pipe stem. I've never used one.

I was looking at a listing for a Brigham "Voyageur" pipe (a brute of a pipe!), since I am currently reading a history book called the Voyageurs. I noticed that it is made in Italy.

Looking at some of the other Brigham pipes, they are also made in countries other than Canada. (The "Rustler, by Wrangler" jeans that I'm wearing as I type this were made in Kenya, and the Hanes Henley shirt made in Honduras.)

Brigham pipes are not made in Canada anymore, they are made in France and Italy I believe and the aluminum tenon is now made of composite.
I do not own any of their newer pipes.

Here is a bad pic of the two filters together for size reference.

-They work well, no restrictions but sometimes small tobacco chunk tend to clog them
- I don’t replace them really often, when I use them, I use 2 filters. After each bowl when the pipe is cool, I replace it by the dry one and let the one I was using dry until the next change. A pair could last me more than a month
- clean them with a pipe cleaner same way you clean a stem

Thanks for this heads up. Bought the book to support the author and read an intriguing truly Canadian story. I have a half dozen and enjoy Brigham’s. A few patent era’s too.

I am also a fan of Trypis pipes he worked at Brigham for a number of years and I can see a common style in some rustication.
