I did made a cigarette blend from a pipe tobacco blend that I did not like, if there’s to much Virginia lemon what could I put to rise the PH of the smoke ? Actually it is Burley : 22.2% Dark air : 9.7% Virginia Bright : 11.6% Virginia Ripe : 11.6% Virginia Lemon : 40.9%

I did smoke a wonderful VaPer from 4noggins last year, Pairie wind, here’s the description: Three types of Virginia tobaccos, blended with a good amount of Perique, make Prairie Wind easy burning, well balanced, and cool on the palate.

Assuming it is probably Red, Bright and Lemon Virginia. Do you have any idea of the proportions including Perique ?

Is ripe and red Virginia the same thing ?

One of my regulars is a VaPer that uses equal parts lemon, bright, and ripe Virginias. I mix up the Virginias press them for about a week under a stack of books and then use an 11:5 ratio with St.James Perique from WLT.

To me the ripe has a more malt-like note compared to the red. I've tried both in the blend above and found myself preferring the one with ripe to the one with red. Try both and let us know which you prefer everyone's tastes are different. For example, I've learned that almost all of @deluxestogie blends taste slightly better to me when I add a bit more of the higher pH ingredients than he calls for in the books. Now, In my mind his tongue loves acids...:p

What we eat or drink (and the food or beverage pH values) impacts our perception of both the taste and acidity of tobacco smoke. And of course, the tobacco smoke's pH influences how much of the nicotine present is absorbed through the membranes of the mouth and nasopharynx. I encourage home pipe tobacco blenders to always adjust blends to their own preference. That's the magic and the joy.
