Anyone know how to get my plants to start growing higher?
Right now my virginia and big gems have about 6 big leaves on them but arent getting any higher, so far there only like a foot tall.
Been watering with rain water and mixed in wood ash to the soil. All 3 plants are planted in 5 gallon buckets, and seem to be doing ok just not getting any height in full sun. They allready have smaller leaves growing in the middle of the plant opening up.
Don't know if i need a fertilizer or what! Will try to add photos this week.

First of all, just be patient, and don't over-water them. They naturally produce additional leaves, then the stalk elongates.

Secondly, potted plants will not grow as tall as the same plants in the ground.

How old are these plants? Tobacco for me has always started out as a clump of leaves setting right on the ground. the stalk does not start to grow for a while. Then it starts to develop the stalk in between the leaves so when ti is done those same leaves that where setting right on the ground are now spaced along the stalk. At the same time the plant is developing more leaves at the top as well as growing more stalk for those leaves. I hope that makes since. To me there is a difference int he leaves the plant produces after the stalk starts growing than those before. Those 6 or so leaves you see now are probably going to be the leaves that are of poorest quality including the sand lugs. the leaves that develop out of that top bud are the first of the best leaves the plant will produce. I hope any of that makes since.

I have also noticed that if the plant is stressed much at all when being started it will want to bolt to flower once plant outdoors. That is part of why I am only giving my plants 4 weeks to start this year. It reduced the time the plant has to be stressed. I am hoping it will then be more relaxed about growing out to a decent size once it is in the garden.
