This year I am trying something new; a little patience. 4 varieties this year will be Comstock Spanish, Lancaster Seed, Pennsylvania Red will be in the raised beds and Little Cuba in the patio pots. I am tapping into the nearby irrigation line to add droppers in the patio pots. Seeds have been direct sown on seed starter mix and under grow lights to germinate. I am going to move the domed flats out to the back patio once the seedlings are big enough. I waited a month later than last year to move them outside sooner instead of relying on grow lights inside to see if that has an impact on the expected maturity dates.

IMG_8174.jpegHere they are 5 days - a scant 120ish hours from sowing directly on the seed starting mix. I have had them covered with a dome which I will remove to avoid root rot. I tapped 3-4 seeds per cell and I would swear every single one germinated. I did not have similar luck with some creeping thyme I want to put in the beds in front of the house. Those seeds were a similar size but I think there was more chaff because the end of the sprinkled rows did not germinate. My thought is the round seeds rolled off the paper first and the damaged seed or chaff slid off last.

It seems to have been a bit cooler here in NE Florida this year, here we are 2 months after sowing, I didn’t document the thinning but only kept the best looking seedlings. The greener leaves are what they have done outside the last 3 weeks on the covered lanai. I did extend irrigation lines to the large pots on the patio this month.
