Picked up some tobacco seeds to play around with. Decided to try 4/8 varieties I picked up. Tried choosing varieties that had shorter growing cycles due to being pretty late at starting. Not expecting too much this season, so fingers crossed. Also on round 2 of some veggies & herbs that most of them from the first round got too leggy and keeled over.

First round of tobacco varieties where ~10-15 seeds were dropped on top of ~2” of a moistened seedling starter mix. Solo cups with wrap over the top, held down with rubber bands.

Varieties I went with are:
-Small Black Mammoth
-Havana Long Leaf
-Bezuki
-Mexican Filler

Veggies/ Herbs in the white tray. All were able to be finagled onto a heat mat.

Shameless plug for this Purple Basil. I love all forms of Basil and the purple is eye catching. Also, our aloe plant and a money tree cutting…. So so many more plants around here and more coming! Lol

4 Days into germination!

This morning I removed the plastic wrap over the top to allow an air exchange and check on growth. Decided to poke some air holes in the top of the plastic wrap with a toothpick for some airflow. Saw some mold starting to form on top of the soil. Some of the mold almost looked like a little spider web starting to form. Took a spoon and removed the patches in question.

My eyes may deceive me, but it appears that 12x of the Bezuki have started sprouting as well!

Picked this up also for once they get a little bigger to transplant into. I like these ones, since they can be filled with whatever media you want to put in it. I haven’t been a fan of those little Jiffy pucks over the years. Personally, just haven’t had much luck with them.

1 week in on the tobacco seeds. A decent increase in germination rates in the last few days.

Some are getting a little leggy. Will most likely transplant those ones in the next day or two. I’m thinking of grabbing some tweezers and putting them into the tray I acquired. Also, toss a low power LED light strip above them (single strip LED). Debating on the dome cover, just until they get a little more strength.

Little hydro garden:
Need to take some more Sage cuttings or use in recipes. I do have 1 sage cutting that is being a little temperamental. Oregano & chives going strong! Sweet Basil is bouncing back from use & cuttings. Cilantro is very early stages & so is the lettuce attempt. Purple Bazil in the corner. Then my better half’s succulents. She’s gotten great results taking fallen off sections and bringing them back to life!

You would benefit greatly from more light based on the photos from post #6. I got by with 2' undercabinet fluorescent lamps for years and for cheap. They came wired with the 110v plug ready to go. That was about nine years ago and I'm sure pricing has gone up since then, but simplicity hasn't. It's a different story if you plan to grow to harvest under lamps.

All your plants look great but the tobacco is obviously searching for light.

Thanks for the tips @Knucklehead ! I’ll be getting that setup within the next couple days.

Day 19

Had some crazy rain and winds come through for a couple days this past week. It ended up creating some sort of “short” in the two outlet sections in the sun room. Broke out the multimeter to check for power going to said outlets & power is coming, but not giving to any items plugged in. Need to figure this out as it took out all of my supplemental lighting for my little guys.

Have a couple LED light clips (2 heads on each clip) 1x with lower wattage and the second with higher wattage for more developed plants. Have 2 (long white) single strip white light LEDs also… just in case. Fingers crossed I can figure out these outlets to be able to fire em back up.

With the lights going out, I’ve been bringing my starter tray out in the sun in the morning for about an hour yesterday and 2 hours today. Bringing them in right around noon.

(Heat mat is powered off)

Also see some more potentials needing to be moved over into cells, probably this weekend or early next week.

A week since last post and Day 26 since dropping seeds in solo cups. Electrical will hopefully be figured out in sun room this weekend for supplemental lighting. I’ve been bringing the cell tray & solo cups outside for a few hours a day now and keep increasing the amount of time, based upon the climate outside. Too hot & humid= less time outside. Otherwise, if rains are coming, not outside during that time either. There’s so much stretching in the cell tray that I’m thinking has occurred due to insufficient light it seems. I’m really hoping that the ones that show some signs of life, will balance out a little and harden up while outside.

Fingers crossed that some from the starting solo’s get a little bigger that they can be strong enough to re transplant in mostly failing cells.

Day 33 from dropping seeds into solos.

I did end up figuring out the wiring/ outlets in sunroom. The way they wired the house is a bit wonky. 2 sunroom outlets + 1 outdoor outlet + 1 basement outlet under breaker box are all wired together. Come to find out… the outlet in the basement by the breaker box is a GFCI outlet aaaaaand it tripped. Hit the reset button and all the above mentioned outlets came back alive!

Since bringing them out in the sun for a few hours a day and getting power back up last weekend, they don’t look super happy outside of the 1 Small Black Mammoth. Jury rigged up a little clip fan to help try to strengthen up their stems a bit more. May transplant the good looking Small Black Mammoth this weekend. Otherwise, I may wait another week and perhaps give it a little haircut.

Also have a couple potential backups, as they keep popping up, still a bit leggy though after fixing the indoor lighting, and the solos have spent some time outside with the above tray.

The tobacco seedlings appear to need at least another month, prior to going outdoors in the ground. Otherwise, they will vanish within 24 hours.

Bob
Got it. Thanks for the advice Bob! I’ve grown many things in the past, but this year is definitely a semi learning for some plants & learning a lot with the tobacco. I have to keep reminding myself that plants don’t like to be over loved. Lol

Looking over some other grow blogs, I decided to take a couple updated pics.

Day 42 from seed:

The bigger Small Black Mammoth looks so similar to some of the tomato plants growing as well. Tried burying some of the leggy stems a little more to try to grow more roots to promote a better base stem. Not sure entirely if that will help, but seemed like a good idea at the time.

Still have some little ones coming up still in the solos:

Lemon trees! Started with 1 seed ~5-6 years ago. Not much growth the first 3 years. Never seen any lemons, but never gave up on it (It was one of the first plants my son and I attempted to grow from seed). 2 years ago it had some great growth and was able to split off a second plant. Since then they withered away with only a couple leaves, which barely hung on. A couple months ago I was going to chuck em both. However, I noticed some new growth on it. My lady trimmed off some dead sections and both have been doing pretty well so far this summer! I know that I may never see any lemons off these babies, but they definitely don’t give up in the face of adversity!

In your first photo, that tall "black mammoth" is a tomato. There are some other hinky plants in that tray.

Bob
Man o man. Im not crazy then! No clue how the heck that happened! Looks like my first year of trying to grow some tobacco is definitely hitting some pot holes. Lol. Lessons learned for sure! I appreciate the facts & findings Bob. Good, bad, or indifferent.

Don't feel bad. I have a volunteer tomato that popped up alongside a Corojo 99 plant, out in the garden. I have four intentional tomato plants growing well, that will surely produce way more tomatoes than I care to think about. These days, I expect to eat my tomatoes fresh, or cooked ad hoc in some stew or other. Canning days are over for me.

Grow one, eat one!

Bob
