So I picked up a "dwarf Rustica" from the local health food store. Figured I'd give it a shot. Brought it home and threw it into a fabric 3 gallon pot. Its now been sitting in my grow tent and has put on flowers. I decided to harvest some of the leaves from the plant right about the time it started flowering, and i topped the plant and pinched the flowers when they first started appearing. As i've been watching the flowers form, I blow into them hoping to increase self pollinization. When the flowers get a bit older and less firm, they pull off the plant easily, and you can taste the sweet nectar at the base of the flower. Super yummy! I wasnt hoping much with this initial plant, as my main goal was just to grab its seed, seeing that the plant i got was already a bit old. So here we are, waiting for the seeds to ripen. I'll then plant the seeds I collect and I'll continue my grow blog from there. Excited to keep this updated!

Basically I'm just trying to grow small batches to make a dokha like smoke. This far I dried about a 6 leaves off of it by letting them hang dry for a couple weeks, then putting them together in a pile inside of a bamboo basket. The leaves have all browned, and now Ive rolled them up together tightly and put them under a weight. A couple of the leaves I have already dried, and they taste almost exactly like the dokha I've smoked in the past. None of the leaves were bigger than my hand.

Was the nicotine noticeable?
I thought dokha would have a “green” taste, judging it from the pictures I’ve seen. (Never found it around here in Germany).
hey there!
The nicotine was noticeable, which i was somewhat surprised, as i'm growing this plant under a 150w LED. But thats also part of the idea behind growing a rustica indoors. Dokha has a spicy complex flavor, something similar to Acid cigars flavors. Perfumey, exotic. Also, I have only had one brand of Dokha over here in the states. Its not popular over here so you typically will only find maybe one brand only in a middle-eastern smoke/tobacco/hookah shop.

Very pretty plant- what’s it growing in?
Fertilizer?
Im growing my plants in a coco coir / perlite mix, in fabric 3 gallon pots under a 100w (1000w equivalent) LED light. I use my urine as the primary nitrogen supplement. I use Maxicrop's "Liquid Seaweed" and General Hydroponic's "Florablend." I also heavily use desulfured molasses for its calcium, magnesium, sugars, and loads of micronutrients. I innoculate the coco mix with Dynomyco's Mycorrhizal inoculants, and I also mix in Down to Earth's "vegan mix" fertizer, which is made up of a bunch of ground up minerals and plants. I'm currently playing with dialing in a completely veganic system, so everything above comes from plant, fungal, and mineral sources, aside from my urine, but that's still vegan. :)

I also found that letting the leaves just air dry slowly until brown has given me the best smoke thus far. I tried pressing the leaves together, under weight, but all that smoke was extermely harsh. I'll continue to try different curing/fermenting methods, but honestly, the taste was so enjoyable just from the leaves that hung. Some were also air dried in a bamboo steamer basket sat in front of a fan.

You should look at Earth Juice Xatalyst- pretty sure it’s vegan, plus it shortens internode length in tomatoes and peppers. Should work for tobacco.

The previous plant that I harvested these new seeds from has been hanging, and browning quite nicely. The new seedlings have been thinned and the remaining survivor is doing well!
Any idea how long you waited from removing flowers to harvesting the plant?

I let the leaves brown on the plant. It took a few weeks. I then took the leaves from the hung plants and put them in a bamboo steamer basket above my Xbox. The idea was to let the ambient heat dry out the leaves. After a few days left to dry, I cut into shreds using a pair of pruning scissors. The above picture is the end result. The flavor has mellowed a bit, but still remains a bit spicy. Strong notes of dried fruit. I lightly pack some into a glass pipe and take a couple rips. Produces a nice buzz thus far.
